He should properly understand this (eschewing of taste) exactly as it has been propagated by Bhagavan in the Agams and thoroughly and immaculately practice equanimity.
विवेचन-भिक्षु शरीर से धर्माचरण एवं तप-संयम की आराधना के लिए आहार करता है, शरीर को पुष्ट बनाने या जिह्वा का स्वाद लेने के लिए नहीं। ___उक्त कथन का अभिप्राय यह है कि वह मनोज्ञ वस्तु हो तो आदर-रुचिपूर्वक और
अमनोज्ञ दुर्गन्धयुक्त वस्तु हो तो अनादर-अरुचिपूर्वक बाएँ जबड़े से दाहिने जबड़े में या दाहिने जबड़े से बाएँ जबड़े में न ले जाय।
इस संदर्भ में उत्तराध्ययनसूत्र (३५/१७) में भी बताया गया है कि 'जिह्वा को वश में करने वाला अनासक्त मुनि सरस आहार में या स्वाद में लोलुप और गृद्ध न हो। महामुनि स्वाद के लिए नहीं, अपितु संयमी जीवन-यापन करने के लिए भोजन करे।'
Elaboration-An ascetic eats food to help the body in following the religious conduct and practicing austerities and discipline. He does not do it to make his body robust or to enjoy taste.
The above statement means that he should not shift the morsel from one end of the mouth to the other with pleasure if it is tasty and with distaste if it is unsavoury. ___ In this context it is mentioned in Uttaradhyayan Sutra. (35/17) that 'An ascetic who exercises control over his taste should not be a slave of savoury food or taste-instinct. A great sage should eat not to satiate his taste-instinct but to sustain his disciplined life.' संलेखना एवं इंगिनीमरण
