296. In the Laadh area Bhagavan suffered numerous afflictions. Many aborigines of that area hít Bhagavan with sticks and other things. (The people of that country were rustics, so-) he generally got dry and insipid food. Hunting dogs in that area attacked and bit him. २९७. अप्पे जणे णिवारेइ लूसणए सुणए डसमाण।
छुच्छुकारेंति आहंसु समणं कुक्कुरा दसंतु त्ति॥४३॥ - २९७. शिकारी कुत्ते जब भगवान को काटने लगते या भौंकते तो कोई-कोई लोग उन काटते हुए कुत्तों को रोकते, (अधिकांश लोग तो) इस श्रमण को कुत्ते काटें, इस नीयत से कुत्तों को बुलाते और छुछकारकर उनके पीछे लगा देते थे।
297. When hunting dogs attacked Bhagavan, a few people prevented the dogs from biting him, and others (most of them) ushered the dogs and shooed them to attack Bhagavan with the intention that the dogs bite this Shraman. २९८. एलिक्खए जणे भुज्जो बहवे वज्जभूमि फरूसासी।
लढिं गहाय णालीयं समणा तत्थ एव विहरिंसु॥४४॥ २९८. उस वज्र भूमि में कठोर स्वभाव वाले रूक्षभोजी बहुत से लोग थे, भगवान ने (छः मास तक) वहाँ पर पुनः-पुनः विचरण किया। उस जनपद में दूसरे अन्य श्रमण अपने (शरीर-प्रमाण) लाठी और (शरीर से चार अंगुल लम्बी) नालिका पास में रखकर विहार करते थे।
298. That Vajra area abounded in cruel people who ate insipid food. Bhagavan continued to wander in that area (for six long months). Other Shramans would dare to wander in that state only with a stick or a pipe (equal to their height). २९९. एवं पि तत्थ विहरंता पुट्ठपुव्वा अहेसि सुणएहिं।
संलुंचमाणा सुणएहिं दुच्चरगाणि तत्थ लाढेहिं ॥४५॥ २९९. इस प्रकार वहाँ विचरण करने वाले श्रमणों को भी कुत्ते (टाँग आदि से) पकड़ लेते और इधर-उधर काट खाते या नोंच डालते। सचमुच उस लाढ़ देश में विचरण करना बहुत ही दुष्कर था।
