Suratagyanbhandar.com Page #16 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Entrance into Light Life has neither beginning nor end. But our life upto this time, has passed impure, miserable and worthless. We in the condition of ignorance and avarice, have seen only misery. He who lives in infatuation and avarice, finishes his life in them and departs having lived such a life, is hurled again into a new series of miseries.. Compassion towards all beings, universal friendship as well as good character, is the only path for the attainment of uninterrupted peace and for the improvement of rebirth. When the theory of Self or Godhood, flashes, not in speaking only, but in behaviour also, only then 92 Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Unmanay.Buratagyanbhandar.com Page #17 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ one can become a real theist (a true spiritualist or a God-believer). And he alone is a true and fortunate atheist (f) who about himself effects non-existence (a) of sins of immorality, injustice and falsehood. Such a theist or such an atheist alone is able to achieve his welfare. A person is sure to obtain his welfare through the way of justice and honesty though not holding any medal or label of any sect. Let us closely and firmly remember To do good to another is to do good to oneself. To injure another is to injure oneself. Never cherish hatred, aversion, jealousy or resenment towards anyone. Never censure any other evil-mindedly. Never think ill of any being. Never be angry or spiteful towards even those who vilify you or have hostility towards you. As nobody cares for prattles of those who are tsatsatsa XXX 13 Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Unwaway.Soratagyanbhandar.com Page #18 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ mad or of those affected with #fana-delirium [ the fever arising from a vitiated state of the three humours of the body ), similarly, unwise men being surrounded by the disease of ignorance or infatuation, do not know what they do, and therefore they are truly pitiable, so a thoughtful man does not care for their insolent censures, nor becomes angry at their reproach. We should wish even such men good and only good, and pray to God for their wisdom and goodness. We should bear in mind that enmity increases by enmity and its bitter fruits have to be suffered for a long time. Goodness or nobleness consists in washing off enmity by the water of forbearance. True manliness consists in being courageous, solemn, forbearing as well as generous and in making and keeping the mind sweet and stainless. In being so there is the very test of accomplishment of real welfare. The practical 18 Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Unmanay. Burratagyanbhandar.com Page #19 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ and wakeful Ahinsa is only in the purity of mind, all-pervading friendship and being disposed to benevolence; and this is the only nectar of life. One day it is indispensable to die, then why does a person move being intoxicated by infatuation or illusory attachment? Why does not he attend to this matter that he will have surely to respond for his bad character ? He always remains meshed in strange, stormy and distressful ideas, but why does not he understand that he (every living being ) alone will have to start suddenly at the stroke of death and will be able to take nothing with himself then, except merit and demerit ? It is most necessary for him to attend to how improvement of life, is done, giving up all useless anxiety and botheration, all unsubstantial entanglements and embarrassments. Life improves, then 15 Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Unmanay. Suratagyanbhandar.com Page #20 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ rebirth improves. Life improves by forsaking bad habits, bad character, selfishness, delusion and illusory attachment, and by treating the good, noble path of truthfulness, self-restraint and service. Really speaking, such a life is itself its reward. Let us rightly understand that to be virtuous or meritorious is only the real worship of God. The sole object of prayer, worship and all other religious rites, is to be virtuous or righteous, i.e. all religious rites are meant to have inspiration or force to be virtuous and thereby to be diligent towards the object. In the Gita (in the eighteenth chapter) the Lord says, "126fm anazzal falde facafa hina: 1" i.e. he who adores Him in the form of his (good) actions, attains Perfection. xxxzzoccorsoasssssxxx Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Unmanay. Burratagyanbhandar.com Page #21 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Thereupon it is clearly understood that good actions, good behaviour, good conduct is the real worship of God. Teaches similarly the great Jainacharya Haribhadra too. Having taken duly into consideration that all this long-continued perdition or miserable condition of ours, is due to our illusory attachment and negligence only; let us remove them and become endowed with right conduct according to right knowledge. Only then there is our rescue. Logical or philosophical discussions about the soul, God and the world, are very vast and very deep, and they remain striking against oneanother and sometimes spreading a quarrelsome atmosphere in people. But-in spite of this, one fact is revealed before the universe and that is the inner feeling throbbing in all living beings, of "I"-" ". On the foundation of this fact all XXX 17 Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Unwaway.Soratagyanbhandar.com Page #22 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Known and universally acknowledged, the precept "Live and let live" has grown and become acceptable by all. Even the staunch atheistic institutions admit this precept and also believe it to be capable of being put into practice. This precept is diffused in people so far that they have understood that it is terrible injustice and a heinous sin to achieve one's own good by des:roying or injuring others' good, and hence they have been able to perceive that as the feeling of "]."_"3467" throbs alike in all living beings, all human beings should behave mutually with good-mindedness and pure friendliness. No doubt, good happiness as well as welfare of all, depends on behaving so (fairly and nobly). Mandal ( Viramgam ) - Nyayavijaya August, 1967 92 Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Unganay. Happiness is attained through Punya and misery, through Papa. Karmic matter is drawn by the activities of the mind, speech and body, and sticks to the soul, so the activities, being the channel of the influx of Karmic forces, are designated Asrava. *Karma means not only action, but the crystallised effect as well of the action in so far as it plays an important part in modifying the futurity of the doer even after his death in the subsequent stages of his existence. In short, Karma is a variety of matter obscuring the real qualities of the soul. Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Unnanay. If some person does wrong to us, we should think that he being impelled by our bad Karma, is so doing. So in this case we should be angry towards our bad Karma, but not with the person who has, in doing so, become merely a handle of our roused Karma. A dog bites a piece of stone thrown away by some man, but a lion jumps over the man who has thrown it (the piece of stone). Likewise, we should not be angry with the stone-like man, but we should be so towards our bad Karma which has thrown to us the stone in the form of the man. Thus, we should not be foolish like the dog, but we should be intelligent as well as brave like the lion, 206-210 Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Unnanay.
