Good action or good *Kārmic matter is Punya; bad action or bad Kārmic matter is Pāpa. Happiness is attained through Punya and misery, through Pāpa.
Kārmic matter is drawn by the activities of the mind, speech and body, and sticks to the soul, so the activities, being the channel of the influx of Kārmic forces, are designated Asrava.
*Karma means not only action, but the crystallised effect as well of the action in so far as it plays an important part in modifying the futurity of the doer even after his death in the subsequent stages of his existence.
In short, Karma is a variety of matter obscuring the real qualities of the soul.
