Self-Realization: The Discovery of Soul It is essential for the human being of modern age to know and practice self- realization. Self- realization is the wonderful process of realizing religion in life. It is of phonetic form and essence of religion. Self- realization is the easiest and speedy path leading to the innate nature of soul. Self-Realization is that of Inner Self-Realization Is that of Inner. It is impossible to communicate realization in its totality. Khalil Zibran says," I use to define love majestically till my heart filled with the sentiment of love. But the moment I realized love all the definitions proved futile in communicating that realization. Similarly is the case with the realization of meditation. Self-Realization is Inner Awakening Meditation is living detachedly. It is the event of inner awakening. Through vigilant meditation your intellect will become awake and consequently your discretion will go along with you. Attachment cannot cling and delusion cannot delude. Thus meditation is innerawakening, inner- discretion. Self-Realization is the Essence of Religion Meditation is entering the real nature of self, away from attachment and aversion. Religion and science are supplement to each other, are the two sides of the same discovery. The discovery of science is

This closeness is meditation. Meditation is the root of religion, reality of religion. The meaning and essence of religion is meditation. Self-Realization is the Art of Living in Present Self-realization is the practice of living in the reality of present moment, parted from past memories and future imaginations. Generally, man is miserable, unable to accept the realities of life as it is, with ease. He attempts to change these according to his mind which is the rejection of truth of life, while meditation is the practice of truth. To accept the present moment in a positive manner is the aim of meditation. Self-Realization is the Practice of Psychic Stoppage and of Cessation Self- realization is psychic stoppage. To cease the influx of new impurity is stoppage. Meditation is soul-purification; it is process of annihilating old accumulated internal impurity. To cope with the present circumstance with equilibrium of mind is Right conduct and that is meditation. Free from any effort to retain the present situation or keep away from it, to maintain one's equilibrium is the practice of psychic equanimity and is meditation as well. Self-Realization: the process of arousing Mahavirahood How we attain purity, how to light the inner like sun, how we become solemn like sea, how we attain the eternal state of enlightened and that of omniscience. All these virtues are inherent in us. Mahavirahood, Buddhahood and Yogahood are inherent in us but in form of seed, are slept and undeveloped. The very practice to develop these seeds is self-realization. Self-Realization: the practice of state of Knower and Seer Acarya Amitagati preached, "Absolute soul in form of bliss, free from entire volition- vikalpa, always remain engrossed in nature, Yogin himself knows the reality."

________________ Sivacarya Dhyanamstam : 43 Thus the state of tranquillity and silence, with neither volition nor vikalpa, is meditation. Observing the sound of So'ham with the natural process of inhaling- exhaling, thought is pacified. After all thoughts are pacified, to remain in the innate state of knower and perceiver, beyond mind, body and speech, is self-realization. The Benediction of All By self-realization, the practitioner gets the experience of leading relaxed, simple, tension free and every moment blissful life. The practitioner gets rid of incurable diseases, at increase in present, increase in working capacity, sweetness in mutual relations, expansion of magnanimity of heart above intellect. He experiences the feeling of welfare of the whole world or the benediction of beings. The self-realization brings benediction in one's self, in family and in universe. It leads to all-round growth of human being as well as religion of mankind and benediction of the universe. Self- Realization facilitates the sacred path of benediction of all. Self- Realization is the bridge of the welfare of the universe with that of self. It spreads the spirit of welfare and benediction everywhere. Self-Realization: Return to the Original State Everything has its original state, for example, that of water is coldness. To heat up the water one has to make effort. Put it on the fire. We have to make some external effort through electricity or the heat of sun to make the water hot. But again it will return the original state after effort is withdrawn. What is the original state of Water? Coldness. Similarly, what is the original state of fire? Hotness. Likewise you also have an original state, i.e. original state of your being. To return to that original state of yours is selfrealization. It is state of detached, state of knower and perceiver. Self-Realization: Powerful Means of Stability Self- Realization is prime among the rituals. Herein the practioner reaches trans-mind fast and the velocity of mind is obstructed soon.

________________ 44 : Sramana, Vol 65, No. 2, April-June 2014 Sometimes, it appears mind is not stable in meditation but it becomes absorbed in prayer, self-study etc. It is because during prayer and self-study, mind receives new thoughts hence its fickleness is not noticed but during meditation because of single recourse the fickleness of mind is noted straightaway. Self- Realization Awakes in Restraint Meditation is very necessary for monks because without meditation enthusiasm and vigour in observing the vows is difficult. Some monks do live restrained life but without enthusiasm, their interest lacking in restraint. One may easily control the body and speech but to control the mind is very tough. Unless the mind is controlled the practice performed with speech and body is not much beneficial, inner is not connected with it. Meditation while restraining the mind, speech and body turns all the activities sentient. Restraint becomes quite interesting to the practitioner who is engrossed in meditation. Raso vai sah. He is Rasa and nothing is more blissful for him than meditation. Self-Realization is the Soul-Bath Bathing is two-fold: physical bath and that of soul. Purity of the body is achieved through bath by water, while that of soul is achieved by meditation. As water-bath makes our body fresh, neat and remove tiredness, in the same way through bath in form of meditation soul becomes pure. By taking bath in lake like meditation, getting rid of anger etc. passions, violence etc. demerits you become pure, enlightened, niranjana, which is nature also. Self-Realization is the Bridge of Acceptance of Truth Every one professes to speak truth but rarely one likes to listen the bitter and harsh truth and only a hero is able to absorb this truth wholly. Only he can fully absorb the truth who has realized the truth within himself, who has perceived the truth within himself. Meditation nourishes tolerance and practice of meditation continuously leads

Indispensability of Self-Realization Owing to ultra-modern researches physicians are bound to accept that psycho-physical diseases can be cured through meditation. Dr. Venson writes in 'The Physiology of Meditation', "In modern society serious diseases like blood-pressure etc. because of mental disorder etc. cause excitement in sympathetic nervous system. In self- realization, the excitement subsided, diseases are cured automatically. Internal Background of Self-Realization We fully connect our mind through natural inhale-exhale with the sound of So'ham' diverting our attention from external environment. By repeated observation of the sound of So'ham', thought is gradually pacified, when thought are pacified we remain in soul. To remain in soul is the occurrence of meditation. Doing to being is meditation. We cannot pacify thought by force. The more we shall attempt to control thought; the series of thoughts will be on the rise. Thus, to observe thought as knower and perceiver is meditation. Self- Realization: Practice of Three Controls (Trigupti) In Kayotsargasutra, it is mentioned, thanenam monenam jhanenam appanam vosirami I abandon myself with the steadiness of body, silence of speech and meditation. Thanenas- steadiness of body, Monenas-Silence of speech Jhanenam by making mind steady in meditation, withdrawing from evil thoughts and become stable in silence. We may term it the practice of three controls (trigupti). To keep mind, speech and body in control is trigupti, the very heart and vital

Breathing- a Link between Body and Soul Breath will easily carry you to soul. Therefore I adopted the medium of breathing. If you recite a mantra or an incantation, repeatedly reciting of that mantra is japa, not meditation. To recite mantra (japa) is not an evil, it is good, but it is not meditation. We have meditated. Nothing to align with breathing, nor mantra, no form, no colour, no shape, nothing; except pure natural and inherent breath. Sitting in calm afterward. Self-Realization - Self-Purification Following aspects are included in the self purification: Physical Purity- through various ancient Yogic activities. Purity of Speech-through restraint in speech and practice of silence, Purity of Food-like food like mind, feeling and experience of pure diet. Vital Purity-through breathing exercises (pranayama) and various sounds. Purity of Mind- Purification, through meditation and equanimity, of mind vilified by vices and ill thoughts, realization of pure consciousness. Thus it is a complete practice, total purity of soul. In the practice of self-realization, there is a special experiment on above-mentioned purification. Self-Realization: Purity of Self Bliss is our nature, peace is within us and we are knowledge ourselves.

________________ Sivacarya Dhyanamstam : 47 Why then human being is trapped in the cakravyuha of sorrow. Why then he is troubled with restlessness. Why then is he roaming in darkness and ignorance? The answer to all these lies in the distance from self. Introduction with the self brings the experience of healthiness in body, peace in mind and bliss within. For the introduction with the self purity of the self is essential. From the constant journey in state of knower and seer the soul is purified. As the darkness disappears as soon as the sun rises similarly with the rise of the state of knower and the perceiver of the soul, the darkness of ignorance and unrest disappears. Meditating on Omkara First deep breathe in, then while breathing out utter two syllables O&M separately. Again utter O&M in continuation. Then utter O and M in ratio of 2:1 of the length of breathe. If anyone unable to do as above mentioned should utter Om with deep breathing. Utter Omkar at least 3, 11, 21, 51,108 times. Thus taking deep breathe and uttering. After uttering calmly meditate on Omkara. Between the two utterances there should be interval. Meditation & Sleep There is a similarity between meditation and sleep. In meditation also you are in a state of doing nothing like in the sleep. But in sleep you are not even aware of yourself, because you are faint but in meditation you are wholly ware of yourself because you are conscious. When someone consciously recollects again and again his routine, he recalls his acts performed non- vigilantly or as a doer, his acts may be good or evil. In practice it may also be charity and theft too. But whatever was committed it was due to delusion, under the effect of anger, pride, deceit or greed. When he observes all that as knower or perceiver, it appears like dream. That is tassa micchami dukkadam. Time for Meditation There is no specific time for meditation one can meditate when one has time or is suitable to his routine. However, it is desirable to fix a particular time for meditation. To meditate at an appointed time sustains the practice. But if unable to fix a definite time one ought to meditate according to his convenience. Why Meditation? If we meditate with expectation, the meditation will not be possible because mind will cling to that expectation. For example, if I have to meditate for mental peace, then while sitting in meditation I will wait for mental peace and will not be able to meditate. Therefore, one should meditate without expectation and without desire. Expectation is not desire. Self-Realization in Group By practice of meditation in group each practitioner gets support from those of others. The enthusiasm and stability increases in practice. If there are more than one practitioner in a family and they practice together daily, or if not possible daily, even weekly, that practice in group will bring peace, equanimity and bliss in family. Mutual problems are also solved naturally.

________________ Sivacarya Dhyanamstam : 49 Fruit of Self-Realization Equanimity is the ultimate result and excellent aim of meditation. Length of time we sit in meditation is not the standard of progress of meditation. The success of meditation lies in the natural relaxation, equanimity, natural silence and natural politeness. Equanimity is the basis for other practical and spiritual achievements. Equanimity is ultimate wealth, is religion. With the advent of equanimity in life other virtues follow in the same way as army follows the commander. Self-Realization: Means of Liberation from Karma The magnitude of Seers and liberated ones is infallible. Our aim is to be like them, it is our volition, and our effort must be to practice on this path. The practice of meditation is not freedom from tension, pain and sorrow. It is the practice of freedom from cycle of birth and death. Soul is roaming in four states of birth from time immemorial. One, who realizes it, is bound to make effort to get rid of it. The soul is within body, in soul are its eight qualities and it is surrounded by eight karmas. For manifestation of the eight qualities of soul, the annihilation of eight karmas is essential. For the annihilation of eight karmas, meditation and body relaxation (kayotsarga) is an excellent mean. Impressions (samskara) accumulated through series of lives may be annihilated through one samayika. We should give importance to detached equanimity,, the practice of meditation and body relaxation in life. Awake - Perception of Soul Liberation is the state of your mind. If there is perception of soul, sinful activity will not bind. In absence of perception of soul sinful activity will bind. There should be discretion within us. With discretion soulperception will follow and there will not be karma- bondage. The perception of soul brings natural peace of mind and eight karmas clung towards the soul, will be annihilated automatically. We have to make effort to annihilate only four out of eight karmas. And Out of four karmas also we have to annihilate only deluding (mohaniya karma). If this karma is annihilated we shall attain knowledge of sol. Knowledge is

One who will practise will positively realize the knowledge of self. What is Pure Detached Equanimity? In Jain tradition, the practice of equanimity is called samayika. In samayika, mournful (arta) and revengeful (raudra) types of meditation are prohibited, i.e. thought of me and my and that of hurting others is prohibited. Generally equanimity is three-fold (1) Inauspicious Equanimity, (2) Auspicious Equanimity (3) Pure Equanimity (1) Inauspicious Equanimity, The duration of equanimity of a lay-votary is forty-eight minute while that of a monk is life-long. If talk of lay- votary or monk is full of jealousy, hatred, ill will, backbiting, pride, insult, deceit, greed and selfishness, after performing equanimity, his samayika will be inauspicious and its consequences will be sin and the fruit of sinful activity, inauspicious state of birth- plant and animal kingdom and hell. (2) Auspicious Equanimity, After performing equanimity, prayer, hymn, japa, eulogy, self-study etc. activities are performed. If these activities are performed with pure disposition it causes cessation of karma, and if performed with auspicious disposition it brings virtues. In this equanimity, there is generally auspicious disposition. Its fruit is state of human being or divine state. (3) Pure Equanimity In this type of equanimity, who am I? What is my nature? What is the aim of my life? Aware of these one remains in the detached state. Equanimity which is performed free of thirty two blemishes is detached equanimity. Herein ten blemishes each of mind and speech and twelve of body are removed.

________________ Sivacarya Dhyanamrtam : 51 What to Do for Attaining Abode of Liberated Ones Reflect on unitaryness while living in the world. You are unitary in the whole universe, absolutely unitary in fifteen lands of action. A pure soul existent in the body of an aspirant / practitioner, whose aim is to discover the absolute soul, hidden in your soul. You have attachment with none. You have hatred with none. You know, confess and accept that this soul is roaming in endless births from time immemorial. You entering the unfathomable depth should strive for liberating your soul from the entire obstructive karmas densely clinging all-round the soul and strive for taking back the soul to fifth state, the abode of liberated ones, getting it out of cycle of state of four births. Nature of Soul Neither I am older nor younger, neither monk nor house- holder, neither good nor bad, neither full of virtues nor full of vices, neither rich nor poor, neither wise nor foolish, neither superior nor inferior, I am only a pure soul, Pure, enlightened, spotless or void of passion, formless, indestructible, immortal, eternal and three time truth. Sense of Gratitude Have a sense of gratitude with each breath. Your gratitude should be dedicated to Enlightened, in the feet of gods and goddesses, in the feet of your teacher who associated you with the religion of detached. There should be a sole aim whether eyes closed or open-I and my abode of liberated, I will go there, return there, disappear there. None is mine, to realize this unitariness, to live in unitariness, thus strengthen the reflection on unitariness. Process of Destruction of Karma: Science of Differentiation Generally, a person feels I am not free, I have so many problems, that of house, family, occupation, so how I practise? But soul may annihilate karmas through science of differentiation along with these problems. For reflection on soul, the activities of body and its relations are not a hindrance. Science of Differentiation I am a pure soul, body is resting, sleeping is the nature of body, and laziness is the nature of body. I (soul) have no sleep, no laziness; I am pure soul, only knower and perceiver. With this feeling we can save ourselves from bondage of karma. Otherwise, there will be bondage of karma whole night. Likewise after getting up in the morning you will observe that there was laziness, non- vigilance in body. I (soul) was vigilant whole night. This is the absolute practice science of differentiation where there is no bondage but liberation. Nature of So'ham Soi.e. That Venerable Liberated. Aham i.e. I am pure soul. Both are same. Soi.e. Those souls of hell and general body plants or micro-organism and Ahami.e. I am same regarding the purity of soul. So i.e. All those souls of animal and plant kingdoms and I pure soul are the same. So i.e. Those deities of twenty six heavens and I (soul) are the same. So i.e. Those enlightened, liberated, Acarya, Upadhyaya, monks and I (soul) are the same. The souls, roaming in six directions and I (soul) are the same. ________________ The Concept of an Ideal Leader : As Depicted in Laghvarhanniti of Hemacandra Rahul Kumar Singh (The quality of a leader, especially of the Kings, ministers and their associates, has been explored from the very beginning of the Indian tradition. A number of works have dealt with the art of leadership. Prominent works regarding this are-Manusmoti, Mahabharata, Arthasastra, etc. belonging to Hindu tradition. Nitivakyamsta, Laghvarrhanniti, etc. belonging to Jain tradition, where the political idieas have been explored very minutely. The Laghvarhanniti describes thirty six qualities to be possessed by the leader, which are related with physical figure and ethical behaviour. In this regard he should also pursue the three goals of human life in harmony. The text provides specific rules and instructions regarding the leader's behaviour. With list of 'do's' for a leader there is also a list of 'dont's' which shoule be appreciated in the context of practices then prevalent. In this paper the author is presenting the Jain way of leadership in the context of Laghvarhanniti of Hemchandra.) -Editor The Laghvarhannitiis composed, in Sanskrit by Acarya Hemacandra for the instruction of the Caulukya king Kumarapala. Acarya Hemacandra in Laghvarhanniti says that he composed his work on Niti at the insistence of king Kumarpala.' He claims to have relied on the ancient Sastra called Arhanniti to which he refers occasionally and which he even quotes at places. From these references and quotations Arhanniti was a Prakrit text.? For Acarya Hemacandra, Rajaniti is held to be distinct from but connected with Dharma and Vyavahara or Varta; which portrays his concept of welfare state. His treatment of Rajaniti may be broadly divided into two parts, a short one dealing with the principal constituents of the state, and a long one dealing with a number of state policies and practicle aspects of governance.

________________ The Concept of an Ideal Leader ... : 55 According to Acarya Hemacandra, the seven constituents (Sapta Prakrti) of a state are: 1. The king (raja), 2. Councillors, ministers and other key officials (amatya and mantri), 3. Territory of the state along with its citizens (janapada), 4. Fortified town and cities (durga), 5. Treasury (kosa), 6. Army (sainya) and 7. Allies (mitra). He emphasized that sovereignty, administration, war and diplomacy constitute the principal aspects of political activity. The period of Acarya Hemacandra was that of monarchy or oligarchy, hence the king was the pivot round which the whole state machinery revolved and personality of the king was the most important element in shaping the state. In order to build a state, which fulfilled the conditions of a welfare state, that is to say, which accomplished the yogaksema of its inhabitants, the king should be a leader with certain attributes. Acarya Hemacandra describes the wise king or leader as follows, "A king, who wants his own welfare, should never derail from the path of Niti"; one who: i. has self-control, ii. has conquered the inimical temptations of the senses, iii. has cultivated the intellect by association with elders, iv. always keeps his eyes open through spies, v. is ever vigilant in promoting the security and welfare of the people, vi. ensures the observance (by the people) of their dharma by authority and examples,

________________ 56 : Sramana, Vol 65, No. 2, April-June 2014 vii. improves his own discipline by (continuing his) learning in all branches of knowledge, viii. endears himself to his people by enriching them and doing good to them. Such a disciplined king should, a. keep himself away from another's wife, b. not take over another's property, c. practice Ahimsa (towards all leaving beings), d. avoid day-dreaming, capriciousness, falsehood and extravagance, e. avoid association with harmful persons, and f. avoid indulgence in harmful activities. A person possessing these thirty six qualities only may be regarded as a king (a leader) in reality. Some of these refer to physical features. For example, the king must not be physically crippled or handicapped. He should have all the signs (laksana) appropriate to the king and his physical aspect should be well formed. The significance of these remarks is two fold. It was an ancient rule that a person was not regarded to be fit for succession if he suffered from severe physical handicap, such as blindness etc. Similarly, it was an ancient belief that the universal emperors possessed certain distinctive physical marks. It was also a popular belief that in some ways one's destiny is writ large in one's physiognomy. In any case, even from a rational point of view, the possession of all faculties as well as of an impressive personality is an initial boost to one who would exercise sovereignty. Physically well endowed, the king should be free from vanity. His personality should be effective, winning the appreciation of all. At the same time he should be compassionate by nature. He should be well educated in different arts as well as in science of peace and war. With perfect endowments of body and mind and with excellent education and training, he should also belong to a pure royal family. He should listen to the elders, love the people and delight in instructing them. He should possess the three powers of authority, council and morale. He

He should himself be honest, well-informed through his spies, taking advice of wise council, industrious and indefatigable, just in his punishments and favours, acquiring sovereignty through proper means, magnanimous, victorious, devoted to justice and well-versed in its principles, eradicating the reasons leading to the perversion of the constituents of the state, energetic, and irrepressible, severe, god-fearing, ingenious, quickly appeared by submission and of a noble nature.? Some of these qualities are personal and native, some depend on application and some relate to the manner in which the state is run. It is obviously an ideal description but it shows popular expectations. Acarya Hemacandra says that the three goals or objective of human endeavour, Dharma, Artha and Kama, are interdependent and should be pursued in harmony. Over emphasis on anyone brings harm not only to that objective itself but to the others as well. There is no need for a king to deprive himself of all sensual pleasures and to lead a life of total austerity, so long as he does not infringe his Dharma or harm his own material well-being. Acarya Hemacandra not only depicts an ideal king or leader but also provides specific rules and instructions regarding his behaviour. At first he should learn self-control, the basis of knowledge and discipline. It is acquired by giving up lust, anger, greed, conceit, arrogance and foolhardiness. In this connection, he should avoid punishment without cause, addiction to music, dance and theatre, and excess sleeping in day time. He should also avoid hunting, gambling, prostitutes, indulgence in women except his own wife, wine, harsh speech and waste of money.10 These 'don'ts' should be appreciated in the context of the practices then prevalent. Wine, women and gambling were the specific vices to which aristocracy was prone from the days of the epics and are also duly mentioned in the Kautiliya Arthasastra. The inclusion of hunting, and old aristocratic pastime which finds praise in the

One would like to add that all these addictions, except hunting are not prerogatives of aristocracy or monarchy alone. Any ruling class distinguished by wealth and power trends to be attracted towards these addictions. Hemacandra has also instructed about the persons to be saluted by king. A king or leader should not bow down to anyone except the gods, his teachers, the Brahmanas, the elders of family and the ascetics." This apparently was a kind of protocol which shows the superiority of the king over all others. He was expected to be lenient towards women, Brahmanas and ascetics. Even if they commit a thousand faults, they should neither be mutilated nor killed. The maximum punishment for them should be expulsion out of country. 12 Laghvarhanniti mentions that three major functions, a king is supposed to perform, are: 1. Raksana- protection from external aggression, 2. Palana- maintenance of law and order, and 3. Yogaksema- safeguarding the welfare of the people. The king should constantly think of the people and ensure that they are not being exploited by the officials. No one should be punished out of greed or anger or pride. Punishment should be strictly in proportion to one's fault. The king should work hard, the treasury should be kept full, the welfare of the country and the protection of the people should be accomplished by Niti." The king has to protect his people not only from an outside enemy, but also from his own administrators. These two dangers are obvious and many political thinkers have mentioned. The guiding principle of the Acarya Hemcandra's legal system may be summarised as follows: Those who seek welfare should never abandon the path of Niti. The king must remember that if he is unjust, he should suffer both in this world as well as hereafter. 14 The king is repeatedly advised to avoid favouritism in the dispensation of justice. In certain matters the king must take direct interest without

These are worship, the protection of the people and the providing of financial support to the needy.15 Acts of public munificence are important for the king. He should encourage learning, distribute free food, make provision for drinking water, rest houses, etc. 16 In Laghvarhanniti Acarya Hemacandra propagates the five principal duties of the king as follows: Punishing the wicked, honouring the good, just collection of wealth, impartial administration and finally defending the country from enemies. 17 For protection of his people the king is advised to secure the three powers (trisakti), four means (catuska upaya), and seven constituents (sapt-anga or prakati). These three parts (vargatraya) of the state need constant attention. 18 Vision, motivation and mission (prabhu, utsaha and mantra) are the three powers. Conciliation (sama), gift (dama), force (danla) and causing dissension (bheda) are the four means. Svami, pradhana, mitra, kosa, rastra, durga and sainya are the seven constituents, but some scholars count praksti as eighth.19 Even a leader, who is possessed of the above described characteristics and qualities, needs council and advice (mantra). Governance is possible only with assistance, as a single wheel does not move. Since governance is not possible for a single-handed king he should appoint ministers and listen to their advice. He should appoint officials and entrust to them the task in which they are efficient. The king, who is eager to the welfare of his people and good administration, shall have to identify and select councillors and ministers (mantri) very carefully, because they are both his eyes (sources of information) and hands (instruments of application). One being considered for appointment as a minister should be possessed of these qualities: Belonging to a good family, well-versed in the scriptures including the six systems of philosophy, well-versed in dandaniti, have high moral, have intellectual and practical qualities, be truthful, patient,

________________ 60 : Sramana, Vol 65, No. 2, April-June 2014 liberal, just and courageous, free from addictions, be a sound judge of persons and possess the gift of foresight, be a man of deep faith, be able to treat a guilty brother and an enemy alike and belongs to a family where such job was hereditary.20 This implies that the post like ministers were generally hereditary. The existence of this practice from early days is evident both from epigraphs as well as from texts on polity. Although the advice to choose a hereditary minister was often followed, it never foreclosed the options of the ruler. The minister is also advised to avoid acting with anger, greed, pride or vanity. He should always speak what is conductive to welfare. His decision should always be fair. His concern should be only the good of the people. After consulting properly, he should act in such a manner with reference to other constituents of the state as well as enemy states that the work of the sovereign is not impeded.21 Acarya Hemacandra's sole attempt is to form a team which can serve the state more efficiently. The ministers, like the king, are for the state, i.e., inhabitants and they should not use the power over the people for their individual interest. His greatest emphasis has been on the king and the minister working in the interest of the people, not otherwise. Prajahita is to be their sole criterion; public welfare and impartial justice are to be the second by the application of a wise, trained and virtuous mind. Sovereignty is neither conceived as personal property or that of dynasty, nor as a game of power. It is not even conceived as the means of enjoyment of wealth and power. It is not also a matter of divine right nor necessary evil arising from anarchy. Sovereignty is conceived, herein from the standpoint of high moral idealism and a great faith in the efficacy of knowledge, training and virtue. The king and his higher officers are expected to follow wisdom and exercise self-control so that they may serve the general good. Here the whole effort of Acarya Hemacandra is to build an institution which would facilitate the people to realise their own goals. The

________________ The Concept of an Ideal Leader... 61 state is not for the sake of leader as in Fascism, but it is an instrument to help people achieve the goal of human life (purusarthas). The ruler is asked to be just and humane and to be devoted to the public good. He was to rely on learning and advice and seek consultation. No emphasis of any kind is placed on the personal aspect of the sovereignty. It is not something to be enjoyed by aggrandizement or exactions or lavish expenditure. It is primarily a matter of public duty, a form of moral life. The above said duties of a ruler or leader (the king and the ministers), to protect and nourish the subject, imply something more than mere protection of persons and their property. It means successful accomplishment of an object and the peaceful and undisturbed enjoyment of that object, for well-being and welfare. Acarya Hemacandra follows the Jain tradition but recognises existing social reality. His Laghvarhanniti is not addressed specifically to a Jain king. It presents what would have been generally acceptable in those days but temper it with the wisdom of Jain tradition. The message of Acarya Hemacandra, bereft of all external embellishments, can be summed up in a few words- 'develop character and self-control, be ceaselessly active, be fearless and endlessly strive to attain your objectives.' This is a message ageless in quality, inspiring both individuals and nations, a message which has come from the lips of great leaders, of all countries and climes, who have led their countrymen from darkness to light, slavery to freedom and from poverty to prosperity.
