India can well be proud of its philosophy, its science of poetics and aesihteics and its grammar, the science of language. Philosophy as propounded by the Vedantic and the Jain Schools, intuitive as it is, has arrived at such ultimate principles which seem to anticipate the latest scientific thought, In the field of, poetics and aesthetics, the recent pronouncements on the fundamental nature of artistic creation seem to echo the tenets of our ancient science of poetics, when, for instance, Mrs. Susanne K. Langer arrived at the conclusion that what an artist creates is virtual emotive experience, Sanskrita scholars are reminded of their age-old theory of a which regards the function of att to be emotive. In the domain of linguistics, as a well-known modern linguist says, "So far as our knowledge goes, the science of linguistics was founded or put on its present basis by one Panini in India several centuries before Christ. Its earliest form anticipated its most recent one." Page #15 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 14 ] There were grammarians before Panini, but the latter's indisputable supremacy has resulted in his predecessors being consigned to oblivion. Amongst the few post - Paninian grammarians who attempted to present the system in a revised form aiming at simplicity, Hemachandra occupies the foremost place. His chief contribution to simplicity is the adoption by him of symbolic terminology which is more direct in its denotative reference than that used by Panini. To give a few instances, Hemachandra uses the self-explanatory terms rati, GEAH, 719:, 37879: respectively instead of 374, m, at, at which are the symbols used by Panini. A peculiar noteworthy feature of Indian grammatic literature, which is witout a parallel in other countries, is the composition of poems which, while they conform to the essential nature of poetry, serve at the same time to supply in each verse an apposite illustration of a grammatical sutra. Such is the Rama-Charitra, better known as Bhatti-Kavyam, written by the poet Bhatti to illustrate Panini's Sutras. Acharya Hemachandra similarly composed two poems to provide apposite illustrations for the Page #16 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 15 ] Sutras of his grammar, the Sabdanusasanam : the Sanskrita Dvyasraya Kavya is written to illustrate the rules contained in the first seven Adhyayas of his grammar which deal with Sanskrita; the other, Prakrita Dvyasaraya Kavya ( Kumarpala Charitam performs a similar function with reference to his last Adhyaya which deals with Prakrita and other middle Indo-Aryan languages. This alliance of poetry and grammar, which is a unique feature of Sanskrita Literature, enlists poetic imagination into the service of the formal aspect of language. It brings the pleasure of poetry to aid and enliven the study of grammar. There exists, in Sanskrita Literature, examples of a different kind of alliance too, namely that alliance of poetry and grammar wherein grammatical categories and terms exploited to aid poetic imagination, to embellish diction and even to suggest an emotion. For instance take this verse in which the neutre gender of the word (mind has been turned to good account in suggesting the helpless state of a pining lover: are napuMsakamiti jJAtvA priyAyai preSitaM manaH / tat tu tatraiva ramate, vayaM pANininA hatAH // Such use of grammatical categories is not Page #17 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 16 ] confined to stray verses. Every one of the Sanskrita Mahakavyas has levied such tribute from grammar, with greater or less poetic merit. Kalidasa has found in grammatical process an, apt analogy for Rama's action of substituting Sugriva for Vali on the royal throne, and has given us a verse wherein this alliance of grammar and poetry definitely enhanaces the charm of the latter. Here is that verse: sa hatvA vAlinaM vIrastatpade cirakAkSite / dhAtoH sthAna ivAdezaM suprIvaM saMnyavezayat / / (raghuvaMza, 12-58 ) Bharavi has also attempted a similar poetic device in his Kiratarjuniyam, But, as the reader will note. in the verse I quote here, Bharavi's effort, though ingenious, misses the simple charm that marks the verse of Kalidasa :sa bhavasya bhavabhayaka hetoH, sitasaptezca vidhAsyatoH sahArtham / ripugapa parAbhavAya madhyaM, prakRtipratyayayorivAnubandhaH // (kirAtArjunIyam, 13, 16 ) The same has to be said, indeed with a greater e'mphasis on the strained contrivance that dims Page #18 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 17 ] the charm, about the following verse of Sri Harsha the author of Naishadhiya Kavya :kriyeta cet sAdhu vibhakti cintA, vyaktiladA sA prathamAbhidheyA / yA svaujasAM sAdhayituM vilAsaH, tAvat kSamAnAmapadaM bahusyAt // (terat 3-73) We must, however, give these poets what credit is due to them. Bharavi has at least endowed his verse with partial double entendre and evolved a Simile out of the grammatical terms used by him; Sri Harsha establishes no analogy between his theme and the grammatical process alluded to, but he too at any rate has a double entendre to offer in the terms faufis, sufihi, TPAT, F ATA, though the phrase HTATHIC is somewhat tortuous, Lower down in this category of alliance of poetry and grammar would come a verse of Magha ( Sisupala vadba 14-66 ) and several verses of Sri Harsha (- Naishadhiya. 2-40, 17 118, 17-148, 20-54) because they therein have achieved little beyond a circumlocution wherein grammatical terms are employed to express the sense which usual Sanskrita vocabulary could have presented in a simple, straightforward manner. The reader may recall here that well known verse in Bhoja prabandha wherein each line of a verse starts off with two words of a Sutra of Page #19 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 18 ] Panini's grammar. These words are used therein to connote not what they mean in the Sutra to which they belong, but something else which is relevant to the theme of the verse, I give that verse here : sarvasya dve sumatimatI saMpadApattihetU. vRddho yUnA saha paricayAt tyajyate kAminIbhiH eko gotre prabhavati pumAn ya: kuTumbaM bibharti, algas quafa uqi afz me (he) fazeg || These instances that we have noticed are entitled to their claim to poetic conception and to dexterity which arrays it in grammatical terminology. There is another kind of verse, found in the literature of all countries, which demands greater ingenuity both on the part of the author and the reader, without any claim to genuine poetic conception. Such are puzzles or riddles, : or f. Occasionally, in Sanskrita Literature, one comes across a conundrum based on Sanskrita Grammar and meant to bring out, when solved, some way. Here is one such verse :-- dhIraH kIdRg vaco brUte, ko rogI kazca nAstikaH / kITaka candraM na pazyanti, tadasUtraM pANinervada // This verse asks four questions to which the answers are, respectively : arthavad, adhAtuH, apratyayaH, Page #20 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 19 ] and gifaqf ; and these when put together, give us the Sutra : spetaquigrafi: affagfull . (atforfor f-2-84) It will at once be seen that this riddle requires, in one who attempts to solve it, a two-fold mental equipment: an adequate knowledge of wordly affairs and a familiarity with grammatical Sutras. The author thereof also must have both wordly wisdom and mastery over grammar, to a much greater degree than the reader. When we bear in mind this need of two-fold accomplishment in the author of such riddles, we can well understand why there is a paucity of such endeavours. * That paucity now becomes a thing of the past. Here is now before us this woface:, confronting us with a challenge to tackle over a hundred such Prahelikas. The moment you take up the gauntlet you find yourselves overwhelmed and deeply engrossed in a composite task, namely that of getting at the purport of the verse before you and also that of laying your finger on the right Sutra. Verse follows verse and drags you on and on until you have solved all the riddles, unless you are compelled by some other urgent matter to lay the self Page #21 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 20 ] imposed ordeal aside. No, in fact this is not an ordeal; it is a pursuit that grips you. The test is severe, but you enjoy it while it lasts, and you eagerly submit to it when the interruption is away.. I confess that is what happened to me when this Hofama: was brought to me with a proposal that I should write an introduction to it. It was only when I had, late after midnight, solved all these riddles that I could grant myself a respite. It was indeed, as I felt it, a very cheap price 'to pay for the pleasure I had derived from the verses, A price? No. I should rather regard it as a privilege. This output of over a hundred arresting verses has been rendered possible by the rich tradition of ceaseless intellectual engagment which is a praiseworthy characteristic of the Jain religious or ascetic order. The author of the work before us, revered Pannyasji Sri Dhurandhara Vijaya Ganivarya is a highly erudite holy man. Now 42 years of age, he took the Diksha at the age of 14 years, It is remarkble that both he and his father Pujya Pannyasji Sri Punya Vijayji Ganivarya were together initiated to the holy Jain order, the 1918 being Sastra-visarada Kavi Ratna Piyush-pani Acharya Sri Vijaya Amrita Suriswarji, who was the chief Page #22 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 21 ] disciple of Sasana Samrat Acharya Maharaj Sri. Vijaya-Nemi Surisvaraji Maharaj. How well Pannyasaji Sri Dhurandhar Vijay Ganivarya has carried on, and contributed to the Jain holy tradition of high scholarship can to some extent be gauged by the very large number of books written by him, both in Sanskrita and in Gujarati. His work* comprise philosophical and religious treatises, Akh. yanas in prose and verse, Poems, a Drama, Stotras, lives of holy men and women, grammatical treatises, commentaries, Sermons etc. These are in all 56, out of which about 40 are in Sanskrita I had the opportunity of meeting the learned Muni Maharaj Sri on the occasion of the formal publication of the first part of his versified commentary siddhahemacandra-zabdAnuzAsanam. His mastery of grammar has now bloomed forth into this aan faara: which though composed with the main object of presenting to readers some Sutras of Hemachandracharya concealed in the sense or in the words of metrical stanzas, occasionally rises to the height of poetry, as in the following verses :- yanmUrvirjanatAmanonayanahat , salakSaNairlakSitA, yadvANI madhurA sudhAdharakarI, spaSTA viziSTAkSarA / * Vide the list appended elsewhere in the book. Several different devices are used in ghofana to supply cues to the required answer, . such as addition, removal or substitution of letters; deman. ding opposite words in answer to the question asked; inclusion of the individual letters of the Sutras along with cues for their identification. In some verses the required Sutra is suggested by means of the synonyms of the words comprising the Sutra. In others, particular alteration in the words of the verse are suggested as helping to locate the Sutra. The devices employed to hint at solution are too many to be described here exhaustively. The reader is referred to the list of various kinds of cues, which is, I understand, to be appended to this volume. The verses are not intended to be pure poetry, whatever casual poetic merit they may attain to in stray instances. But they do challenge the reader's ingenuity and thereby endow with a welcome interest a subject which would otherwise prove dry and uninvitive, To present a challenging problem to the intellect is to excite interest; and to excite interest is to vitalize the mind and thereby to fix the Sutra, arrived at as answers, firmly in the memory. This work, lakSaNavilAsa: is of course meant not for the general reader but for the reader who is a student of Sanskrit grammar and, in particular to a student of siddhahemavyAkaraNa. Such a one is the Adhikari reader of these verses, And if the reader posses this Adhikara, his caufama: will, as the first verse claims, brinig him in direct touch with the Sutras covered, and will prove to be an utsavarUpaH vilAsaH a festive entertainment-in the province of grammar.
