________________ [ 16 ] confined to stray verses. Every one of the Sanskrita Mahakavyas has levied such tribute from grammar, with greater or less poetic merit. Kalidasa has found in grammatical process an, apt analogy for Rama's action of substituting Sugriva for Vali on the royal throne, and has given us a verse wherein this alliance of grammar and poetry definitely enhanaces the charm of the latter. Here is that verse: स हत्वा वालिनं वीरस्तत्पदे चिरकाक्षिते । धातोः स्थान इवादेशं सुप्रीवं संन्यवेशयत् ।। (रघुवंश, १२-५८ ) Bharavi has also attempted a similar poetic device in his Kiratarjuniyam, But, as the reader will note. in the verse I quote here, Bharavi's effort, though ingenious, misses the simple charm that marks the verse of Kalidasa :स भवस्य भवभयक हेतोः, सितसप्तेश्च विधास्यतोः सहार्थम् । रिपुगप पराभवाय मध्यं, प्रकृतिप्रत्यययोरिवानुबन्धः ॥ (किरातार्जुनीयम्, १३, १६ ) The same has to be said, indeed with a greater e'mphasis on the strained contrivance that dims
