at the same time, it is a most intricate and complex subject the study of which presents a great many difficulties and problems, not all of wbich have been solved so far. With erudition and acumen, you have furnished a most useful contribution and successfully advanced our knowledge. I learn with great interest from you letter of April 26th, that two more studies from your pen are to follow soon. I wish both the Kriya and Pudgal Kosa a speedy publication and full success
Prof. Dr. K. L. Janert, Director, Institute fur Indologic Der Universitat Zu Koln.
Some days ago, I have received your book Lesya-Kosa, and I should like to thank you very much for having sent it to me. And apart from having to thank you for your kindness, I also owe you a valuable addition to my Library. It is always a matter of great satisfaction to me to see a scholar not recoil from the arduous task of compiling dictionaries, indexes etc.--even that great English Critic and Lexicographer, Dr. Samuel Johnson. called it drudgery some two hundred years ago. And it is of course only diligent collection and comparison of all relevant material that genuine advance in knowledge is based on. So we shall have to thank you for having made work easier for those who come after you.
It is most gratifying to observe how a man like you, with an exacting profession to follow, still has the energy not only to conceive a plan like yours, but also to carry it through. This is an instance of the distinction between profession and vocation. Let me congratulate you on your achievement and thank you very much.
Dr. Nalinaksha Dutt, Retired Head of the department of Pali & Prakrit, Calcutta University.
The author has performed an arduous formidable task by collecting not merely the references to the Jaina literature but also by quoting stanzas and passages wherever the term Lesya occurs and arranging them in the order adopted in the Jaina treatises The book is highly commondable and will serve as a valuable and indispedsable handbook for all students of Jainism, whether of the Universities or of the Jaina monastic institutions.
