________________ ५२२ लेश्या-कोश noticing the interesting bit of information given by Jinasena Suri's Harivamsha ( II, 13 ) which supplies the names of Mahavira's grandparents as King Sarvartha and queen Shrimati. The statement that whereas the Shvetambara works give the name of Mahavira's family as Jnatri, the Digambara call it Natha, is not quite correct the Digambara outhor Pujyapada, of the 5th century A. D. specifically describes Mahavira as "The moon of the Jnata family.' There is ather evidence, too, in support of the fact that the Digambara authors also believed the name of the family to have been Jnata, Jnatri or Jnatrika. It would, perhaps, not be correct to say that the form of the name Vardhamana used by Kundakunda, Vattakora, Yativrashabha, etc. is not Prakrit but is Apabhramsha. The scheme of compiling such topical dictionaries was initiated and launched upon by the late lamented Sri Mohan Lal Banthia who, with the assistance of Pt. Srichand Choraria, published the LeshyaKosha in 1966 and the Kriya Kosha in 1969. The Pudgala-Kosha and Dhyna-Kosh seem to have also been compiled. The VardamanaJivana-Kosha is the third publication of the series, but whereas the other Koshas of the series are related to certain specific philosophical concepts, the present one concerns the life-story of a historical personage. Since Banthiaji's demise in 1976, the work of its completion and editing fell solely upon Pt Chorariaji who acquitted himself of this task with flying colours. The patience, perservrance and hard work put into it is a credit to him for which he deserves hearty congratulations. The office bearers and members of the Jaina Philosophical Society, Calcutta, who have undertaken the work of implementing the schemes of Banthiaji in this direction also deserve thanks for enabling Pt Choraria to complete the work and publishing it.
