In Kelaniya is erected a Dagoba over the golden chair on which Buddha bad sat, and an eddy in the river that flows by is shown as the waters making obeisance to where he once stood. An old Singhalese couplet - Upanda sifa kkarapu pav neta Varuk vendot Kelanie - asserts, "if a person once worships at Kelaniya, all the sins committed from the day of his birth are forgiven."
