(..) Variant readings based on the Vitti There are no identical readings of different versions in the special manuscript of the vrti and the printed vṛtti. We have taken the manuscript vrti as authoritative. Rayapaseniyam The text of this sütra has been determined on the basis of manuscripts and the Vrtl. Jiväjiväbhigama and Aupapätika-sutras have also been used for determining the texts of the Süryabha and the Drdhapratifña chapters respectively. The commentator has mentioned the abundance of variant readings in different versions at every step. At the time of composing the commentary it posed a serious problem, but in later times it assumed still more serious dimensions. Even then we have revised the text by analysing the available material very minutely. None can claim that the revision of this text is totally flawless but this much can be asserted that we have maintained utmost neutrality and patience in our attempt to perform the task. The construction of the text of this sutra has exacted vast labour, and resulted in the enlargement of the body of the sutra, as also in the intelligibility of the text and the tastefulness of the subject-matter. Variant words and forms The variant words and forms as approved by grammatical rules and holy usage in Agamas are important from the linguistic standpoint, so they have been distinguished from the variant readings and are given below Sutra No. 8 mauda matuḍa Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only (ka) www.jainelibrary.org
