1. Ovaiyam Nomenclature
The present agama is called Ovõiyam (Aupapātikā). Its main theme is udapāta. Samavasarana is its incidental treatment. On the basis of the main theme treated herein, it is known as Ovãiyam (Skt. Aupapāt ika). On deleting Jetters "va” as per the Prakrit Grammar Rule, we get ovāiyam form in place of ovavăiyam. We come across the same name in the Nandisutra. Subject-Matter
The main theme enunciated in the Aupapātika is 'rebirth, that so and so upapăta (instantaneous rebirth) takes place because of such and such conduct.
The exordium consists of many types of descriptions of town, monastery, garden, king etc. The present sūtra has come to be known as a Varņaka (describer) sūtra because of these descriptions and has been used in various epilogues for this reason. Commentaries
The first commentary of the Aupapātika is the vitti by Abhayadeva Sūri, the commentator of the nine agamas. The introductory verse shows that Abhayadeva Súri had got no other earlier vpiti in front of him. He composed this vrtti with the help of other texts. He himself mention :
Śrīvarddhamānamānamya prāyo'nyagranthaviksitā /
aupapātikaśāstrasya vyakhyā kācidvidhīyate 11 The commentator has mentioned the views of the foregoing åcāryas at - several places.
1. Snānādvă pāņdurībhūtagătrā iti vrddhāb/(Vștti p. 171) 2. cūrņikārastvāha/(Vịtti p. 224) 3. asya ca vfddhoktasyādhik tagāthavivaranasyärtham bhāvarthah/
(Vrtti p. 225) This commentary is neither too elaborate not too abridged. Its medium size contains most of the points worth discussing.
The Oväiyam contains numerous variant readings. Abhayadeva has des. cribed the first sūtra thus-"This sūtra is abundant in variant readings. I shall deal with only what is intelligible."3 Most probably such variant readings do
