Kathakośa (ŚKk) and Hariṣena's Kathakośa (HKk) show important phonette differences in some of the proper names; and these are impossible if ŚKk was soley indebted to HKk. For instance: ŚKk has Jasabara, Vissambhara, Donimamta, and Kuccavāra for which HKk has Yasoratha, Visamdhara (No. 5), Tonimam (No. 54) and Kūpakāra (No. 95,) respectively. Then we may compare some of the quotations found in HKK and SKK in different contexts. Namely, HKk 54. 17--18 and ŚKk 11. 17; HKk 57. 518--9 and SK 20. 20; and HKk 143. 37 (39); and ŚKk: sakyam eka-sahasrena etc. Some of these readings show wide differences which cannot be explained if Sricandra followed only Harisena. Some of them are major differences. With Sricandra all these are quotations, because they occur in the body of an Apabhramsa text; and if Sricandra took them from Hariṣena, he would not change them, because he is quoting themSome of the verses are not correctly presented and till the original sources are detected, it is difficult to say who is correctly quoting them. The divergences may be explained thus. Both Sricandra and Hariṣena are indebted to a common source, so far as some quotations are concerned. Perhaps Śricandra quotes them as they are. Harisena, however, may have been required to retouch them, because some of them are to form a part of his running Sanskrit text and are not necessarily quotations. It is seen elsewhere that Amitagati also rewrites in this manner some of the Sanskrit verses which stood as quotations in the Prakrit Dhammaparikkha used by him. There is at least one instance where Śricandra's quotation is nearer the original than that of Harisena: for instance, HKk 57. 531 and Śkk 20. 21. This quotation comes from the Bha. Aradhanā (No. 882, Sholapur ed.) where the reading is jo mado jivo and not kunat jo kalam. It is a good indication, though not a conclusive evidence, because it is a Prakrit quotation. To conclude, it is sufficiently clear that Śricandra has used HKk; and further, he appears to have used some additional sources, some of them possibly common with those of Harisena, in composing his Apabhramsa Kk.
Though the Ms. of ŚKk was known since 1923, no other Ms. has been discovered in the last 40 years during which many new Apabbramsa works have come to light. Some years back, this Ms. was kindly lent to me by Dr. HIRA LAL JAIN; and he allowed me to keep it with me as long as I wanted it. I wrote a paper on it.22 Further it proved of great valtie to me in my study of the Bṛhat-Kathakosa and its relation with the Bha. Aradhana. The folios of this Ms were so brittle that I felt that this work should be published at an early date. There was no point in waiting for some other Ms. any more. I urged, therefore, Dr. HIRALALJI to edit this from a sigle Ms. Any other younger scholar would not have had the 'confidence of editing it from only one Ms. Today though many
