'જૈન ભૂગોળ-ખગોળ : એક સમસ્યા
15 આ લખાણનું તાત્પર્ય એ છે કે “જૈન પરંપરાના ભૂગોળ અને ખગોળ અન્ય બ્રાહ્મણ તથા બૌદ્ધ પરંપરા કરતાં વધુ વ્યવસ્થિત છે અને ગાણિતિક દૃષ્ટિએ શ્રેષ્ઠ છે. બ્રહ્માંડ અને વિશ્વના સંદર્ભમાં જૈન દૃષ્ટિકોણ કાંઈક અંશે જટિલ છે, છતાં મૌલિક અને આદર્શ રૂપ છે. .. આ રીતે બ્રહ્માંડના સ્વરૂપને સમજાવવા માટે જૈન ભૂગોળ-ખગોળમાં પ્રતિક સ્વરૂપે ચિત્રાંકિત કરવામાં તેઓએ નિપુણતા દાખવી છે.”
ભારતીય સંસ્કૃતિના પાયામાં જ આધ્યાત્મિકતા રહેલી હોવાથી ભારતની કોઈપણ પ્રાચીન પરંપરામાં બ્રહ્માંડના રહસ્ય પામવા, જાણવા માટે પ્રાચીન મહર્ષિ ઓ એ અધ્યાત્મનો જ માર્ગ અપનાવ્યો છે. પ્રાચીન કાળમાં બ્રહ્માંડનાં રહસ્યોનો જાણવા માટે ભારતીય પ્રજાજનો પણ ખૂબ ઉત્સુક હતા. અને આ વિષયમાં બીજી કોઈ પણ સંસ્કૃતિથી ઊણા ઉતરે તેવા નહોતા. આ અંગે ફ્રેન્ચ સંશોધિકા શ્રીમતી કૈલટ કેચ્યાં (Collete Cailat) ધ જૈન કૉસ્મોલોજી (The Jain Cosmology)નામના પુસ્તકમાં કહે છે. - -
“The civilization of India, no less than other civilizations,
has not failed to ask questions about the place which man occupies in the world and the location of both the human and the animal kingdoms in space and time. To these questions, for more than 3000 years the different religious circles and principal schools of thought in India have striven unceasingly to supply answers” (Pp.9)
