सद्वृत्तं दधता स्वभावमृदुना निःश्रेयसप्रार्थिना साधूनां हृदयोपमेन शुचिना संप्रेरितः प्रेयसा । एतत्सादरमार्यनन्दिगुरुणा सिद्धये व्यधात्तासगः कीर्त्यत्कीतनमात्रचारुचरितं श्रीसन्मतेः सन्मतेः ॥ इति वर्धमानचरितं समाप्तम्
The first four verses give the biographical details about Asaga, and they are noted below from the SP. The fifth verse gives some additional information that Asaga completed the MC or Sanmati-carita (as titled here) being encouraged by Aryanandi-guru whose great virtues are mentioned by him, in details.
In the Santipurana more biographical details are available. The relevant verses may be quoted here :
मुनिचरणरजोभिः सर्वदाभूत [पूत ?] धात्र्यां प्रण तिसमयलग्नैः पावनीभूतमूर्धा । उपशम इव मूर्तः शुद्धसम्यक्त्वयुक्तः पटुमतिरिति नाम्ना विश्रुतः श्रावकोऽभूत् ॥ १ ॥ तनुमपि तनुतां यः सर्वपर्वोपवासैस्तनुमनुपमधीः स्म प्रापयन् संचिनोति । सततमपि विभूति भूयसीमन्नदानप्रभृतिभिरुरुपुण्यं कुन्दशुभ्रं यशश्च ॥२॥ भक्ति परामविरतं समपक्षपातादातन्वती मुनिनिकायचतुष्टयेऽपि । वैरेतिरित्यनुपमा भुवि तस्य भार्या सम्यक्त्वशुद्विरिव पराभूत् ॥ ३॥ पुत्रस्तयोरसग इत्यवदातकीर्त्योरासीन्मनीषिनिवहप्रमुखस्य शिष्यः । चन्द्रांशुशुभ्रयशसो भुवि नागनन्द्याचार्यस्य शब्दसमयार्णवपारगस्य ॥४॥ तस्याभवद्भव्यजनस्य सेव्यः सखा जिनापो जिनधर्मभक्तः । ख्यातोऽपि शौर्यात्परलोक भीरुद्विजादिनाथोऽपि विपक्षपातः ॥५॥ व्याख्यानशीलत्वमवेक्ष्य तस्य श्रद्धां पुराणेषु च पुण्यबुद्ध ेः । कवित्वहीनोऽपि गुरौ निबन्धे तस्मिन्नधासीदसगः प्रबन्धम् ||६||
1. They are quoted in full below, 1.4. These common verses in the Praśastis indicate that one and the same Asaga is the author of VC and SP.
