________________ xxxvi INTRODUCTION contributed many papers to the Jurnal of the Royal Asiatic Society.etc. Among his Sanskrit works thoss entitled मतपरीक्षा, नूनोदन्तोदोत्सः अर्थात् ज्ञानप्रशंसापूर्वक इंग्लंडाख्यदेशरी ति वर्णनम्, ईश्वरोक्तशास्त्रधारा, शर्मपद्धतिः, श्रीयेषूखुष्टमाहात्म्यम् , श्रीपौलarista, etc., published along with their translations into English and several Indian languages during his stay in India, appear to be written purely for being used in the conversion propaganda of the missionaries. After his retirement he settled at Edinburgh, where he did much for the uplift of Sanskrit studies in Great Britain and was honoured by various Universities in recognition of his learning and work. He died in 1882. He was elder brother of Sir William Muir, a distinguished Arabic scholar and LieutenantGovernor of U. P., after whom the Muir Central College of Allahabad was named. He was persuaded that the only way in which they could escape the tyranny of caste, with all its attendant evils, was by being made to know how they had become what they were, and also how the freer and more civilized Western peoples believed and lived.
