V'sabdaya- incl Skt. only means 'give forth sounds, cry, call' but in 35 Su employs the present active participle sabdayan in a transitive sense as an explanation of di ghiku van Ordinarıly denominatives with causative value are derived from adjectives, exx kalusayatı 'makes turbid', sitlulayatı 'makes loose 13
Sala- (with variant sarala- in two MSS ) for nīda- (ʻnest') in nīdāi ambhaih (25) is unrecorded in the lexicons in this or any related sense As used here it can be plausibly referred to všal in the Dhātupāțha (1 519) which is defined calanasamyai anayoh 'to move and to cover' With V sal are to be connected śarman, sarana, and śarīra,44 in all of which the concept of 'cover' is involved in one way or another The simple všal is not found in cl Skt, only forms compounded with ut, sann-ut, etc , though none of these compounds of V'sal has the meaning 'cover', there cannot be any doubt that Indo-Aryan possessed V*ýr, V*śļ in this sense This is proved not only by the inclusion of Všal in the Dhātupājha and the obvious derivates of its variant Visar, but also by its well-attested status in other Indo-European languages where the meaning 'cover' is preserved, thus, cf Latin cēl-āre 'hide' (with lengthened grade of ablaut), cl-am (with total loss of vowel), and <I E *kolmos, kolmos cf Anglo-Saxon helm'protector, protection' (normal grade), Gothic hilms and Lithuanian sálmas, all three of which precisely correspond to Skt sarman except for a difference in declensional scheme As a derivative of Visr, V*$1 JS sala might mean either that which covers' (nomen agentis) or 'a covering' (nomen actions), precisely as the Anglo-Saxon helin These meanings of śala, then, are clearly older than those given by MW for cl Skt śala, or perhaps the two words are not even related, and the meaning 'nesť subsumed under JS sala ought to be included under a new entry
