(c) avida avida (as an expression of sorrow) Pu X 12, Mk X.12 (d) (v) bankuda (Pu X7) in the sense of crooked, vaknu (Mk X 5), vankubha (Mk X 6) also valana ? (Mk X 7) (e) avalada (in the sense of upakrta, favoured) Pu X.8 VIII eva is substituted by ppeva, cia and cea (Pu X 10) and jjea, jsia (Mk X 10) IX āre is used in the vocative and upekşă (deplore) (Pu X 11) X The peculiarities of this dialect should generally be gathered from the usuage of the people (Pu.X 13, RT II 2.3, 9. Avanti Puruşottama derives Avantī from an admixture of Mahāraş. tri and Sauraseni (Pu XI 1) But according to Rāmaśarma (II 2.5) the Avanti and the Bāhliki dialects are practically the same The only difference is that they are used by different characters in a drama Basically the forms of Bāblīkī are derived from an admixture of Sauraseni and Prācyā (II 2 5) But Mārkandeya (XI 1) follows the view of Purusottama when he says“Avantī syān Mahārāsfrī-Saurasenyostu sankarāt" In this commentary he adds that the countries Malava, Ujjayini etc, constitute the Avantideśa, and says—"rad bhavā Āvanti-Dandikādibhāsā" He quotes a verse from Bharata which is not found in the Nātyśāstra Dāndika-pānika-pānţika-nagarādhipa-dāndapānika sadrksesu / madhyama-pâtresu sada yojyāvanti tu nāfyavıdhau // As for example "esa kirādo maam anusaranto vedasalaagahanam paittho atro hırādo vedasa iti Saurasens anyāni padāni Mahārāstri" According to the Canons of dramaturgy the Avanti is spoken by characters of medium rank, a town mayor,
