A lay person should strictly avoid the following five occupations harmful to living beings: Occupations dealing with furnaces, Occupations involving destruction of lant or animal life, or Pollution of the environment and natural resources, Trading or renting of animals and birds, animal testing, leather, fur, ivory, silk, meat, honey, liquor, pesticides, toxic substances, Slaves, bird feathers, animal hairs, and weapons. (22) For the same reason one should avoid the following five activities; use of grinding machines; piercing of the nose, ears or cut off body parts; setting fire in forests, houses or fields with vegetation; emptying lakes and water reservoirs; supporting the profession of prostitution; and raising wild animals. (23)
