The text of Pariksa mukha-sútra together with its commentary called Pariksă mukha-laghuvrtti printed in this fasciculus is based on three manuscripts of which one was procured from Jaipur, Rajputana, another from the Deccan College, Poona, and the third from the Asiatic Society of Bengal. The Parīkņāmukha-sūtra is a well-known Digambara Jaina work on Logic (Nyāya) divided into six chapters which treat respectively of (1) the characteristic of valid knowledge, pramānasvarū pa ; (2) direct apprehension or perception, pratyakşa ; (3) indirect apprehension, parokşu : (4) object of valid knowledge, visaya : (5) the result of valid knowledge, phala ; and (6) the semblances or fallacies, abhāsa. The author of the Sūtra is named Māņikya Nandi' or Ratna Nandi, who belonged to the Digambara sect. In chapter vi of the work he mentions the Bauddha,' Mīmāṁsaka,+ Sámkhya," Laukāyatika, Saugata,' Yauga," Prābhākara" and Jaiminiya!" systems of philosophy. In chapter iii he refers to a certain philosopher' who distinguishes three phases of the reason or middle term. This philosopher is evidently Dharmakīrti who divides the reason or । देवस्य मम्मसमपास्तममस्मदोषं बोच्य प्रपञ्चरचिरं रचितं समस्य Howafafayat fagavat: Araafqawa TTARUI (Purīksāmukha-laghuvịtti, chapter i. p. 13). प्रत्यक्षतरभभिन्नममलं माझं विधवादितं देवैर्दिव्यगणे विचाय्य विधिवत् संख्यामतेः संग्रहात् । मानानामिति तदिगप्पभिहितं श्रोरखनन्द्याकः Hieraaet fauxfweg Atifaq (Parikṣāmukha-laghuvștti, chap ter ii, p. 25). 3 Aphorism 6.
