________________ VIII 8 Note the more archaic form of the question in Viy. kenam kh'ai aṭṭhenam... as against kamhā ņam... in Jambudd. a (394a) Junction (bandha) is effected either A. spontaneously (visasă-b.) or B. by an impulse (paoga-b.). (394a) A. Spontaneous junction may I. have no beginning (anaiya) or II. have a beginning (sāiya). 9. BANDHA. I. Spontaneous junction without beginning consists in the concatenation of [units of] Motion, Rest and Space (dhamm'-, adhamm'- and āgās'atthikaya-anna-m-anna-aṇāiya-vīsasābandha) in which case the junction is partial (desa-bandha) [since there is no interpenetration] and eternally lasting (savv'addham). Infra the data regarding the duration of the different kinds of junction have, as a rule, been left out of consideration. II. Spontaneous junction has a beginning in the case of aggregates of 2 up to oo units, which may be (1) based on cohesion (bandhana-paccaiya) due to differences of smoothness and roughness (vemaya-niddhayãe, v.-lukkhayãe, v.-niddha-lukkhayāe); (2) based on decomposition (bhāyaṇa-paccaiya) as is the case with decomposed (junna) victuals; (3) based on change (pariņāma-paccaiya) as is the case with clouds (abbha) and the like, ref. to Viy. III 7a (195b). anna-m-anna- and desa-baddha, not savva-baddha: joined like the links of a chain, not like milk and water, Abhay.; cf. B. III. (2) d below.-On vemāya Abhay. quotes two gāhās according to which there is junction of smooth and smooth or rough and rough only if the degree (guna) of these properties is different, whereas there is junction of smooth and rough both of equal and of different degrees, except in the lowest degree (jahanna-vajja); cf. Lehre par. 59 end. (395b) B. Junction effected by an impulse may I. be without beginning and 'end (anaiya apajjavasiya) as is the case with the eight central units (majjha-paesa) of the soul, each junction of three of which is without beginning and end; the other [units of the soul, Abhay.] have a beginning. 154 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
