be related to psychical changes as their upādāna käraṇa. Neither jiva is the Karta of Karmas, nor matter is the Karta of changes in the jiva. Thus there can be no identity between Self and matter, cetana dravya and acetana dravya.
Next it is pointed out that though Self and matter cannot be related to each other as material cause, still both may be related to each other as instrumental cause.
जीव परिणामहेतुं कम्मत्तं पोगला परिणमति ।
पोग्गलकम्मणिमित्तं तहेव जीवो वि परिणमदि ॥ ८० ॥ jivapariņāmahedum kammattam poggalā pariņamaṁti poggalakammanimittant taheva jivo vi parinamadi (80) परिणामहेतुं कर्मत्वं पुद्गलाः परिणमन्ति ।
पुद्गलकर्मनिमित्तं तथैव जीवोऽपि परिणमति ॥ ८० ॥
80. As conditioned by the modifications of jiva, the material particles get modified into karmas. Similarly, conditioned by the Karmic materials, jīva also undergoes modifications. वि कुव्वदि कम्मगुणे जीवो कम्मं तहेव जीवगुणे । अण्णोष्णनिमित्तेण दु परिणामं जाण दोन्हं पि ॥ ८१ ॥ .
navi kuvvadi kammagune jivo kammam taheva jivagune annonnanimittena du pariņāmam jāņa donham pi (81) नापि करोति कर्मगुणान् जीवः कर्म तथैव जीवगुणान् । अन्योन्यनिमित्तेन तु परिणामं जानीहि द्वयोरपि ॥८१॥
81. jiva does not produce changes in the qualities of karma nor does karma similarly in the qualities of jiva. The modifications of those two, know ye, are the result of one conditioning the other as nimitta kāraṇa or instrumental cause.
एदेण कारणेण दु कत्ता भादा सएण भावेण । पोग्गलकम्मकदाणं ण दु कत्ता सव्वभावाणं ॥ ८२ ॥
edeņa kārņeņa du kattā ādā saena bhāveṇa poggalakammakadāņaṁ ṇa du kattā savvabhāvāṇaṁ (82) एतेन कारणेन तु कर्ता आत्मा स्वकेन भावेन ।
पुद्गलकर्मकृतानां न तु कर्त्ता सर्वभावानाम् ॥ ८२॥
82. For this very reason the Self is the substantial cause of his own modifications (both pure and impure); but is not the substantial cause of any of the modifications of Karmic matter.
