શ્રી મહાવીર
સાહિત્ય જોતાં ગોશાળો છેક આટલો બધો નષ્ટજ્ઞાન અને વિક્ષિપ્ત ચિત્તનો હોય એમ માની શકાતું નથી. તેણે તે કાળે પ્રવતવિલો આજીવક મત અત્યારે હિંદમાં લુપ્ત થઈ ગયો છે અને તેના શું મુખ્ય સિદ્ધાંતો હતા તે પણ ભાગ્યે જ કોઈના જાણવામાં છે, પરંતુ બુદ્ધ અને મહાવીર પ્રભુના કાળમાં અને છેવટે અશોક મહારાજના સમયમાં તે એક બળવાન પ્રચલિત મત હતો એવું પ્રો. કર્ન (Prof. Ken)નું માનવું છે. ખુદ અશોકે પણ ગોશાળાના આજીવક મત સંબંધમાં શિલાલેખો કોતરાવેલ છે. જીવદયા એ ગોશાળાના મુખ્ય સિદ્ધાંતોમાંનો એક હતો. આ સંબંધે મનોરંજન ઘોષ નામનો એક વિદ્વાન લખે છે
“The history of the Ajivkas reveals the curious fact that sacredness of animal life was not the peculiar tener of Budhism alone but the religion of Sakyamuni shared it with the Ajivkas and the Nirgranthas. They had some tenets in common but differed in details... They were naked monks practising severe penances. We fine the Ajivkas an influential sect in existence even in the time of Buddha, Mokkali Gosala was the teacher of the Ajivakas with whom Gautam Buddha had a religious controversy."
અર્થાત - “આજીવકોના ઈતિહાસમાંથી આપણને એક જાણવા જેવી એ હકીકત મળે છે કે, જીવદયા એ માત્ર બુદ્ધનો એકલાનો જ ખાસ સિદ્ધાંત નહોતો, પણ આજીવકો અને નિગ્રંથો (જૈનો)નો
