________________ 642 APPENDIX 176–271. These rules describe changes that consonants undergo in Prakrit. 176. 'This is an afbrey and each of the three words Faria , consonant after a vowel, (rynet ), of a non-conjunct, and stare:, non-initial, are to be borrowed in interpreting each subsequent Sætra. 177. The eight non-conjunct, i. e., single, non-initial consonants, $, T, etc., occurring after 'vowel, are generally dropped. This is one of the fundamental rules of Prakrit phonetics with far-reaching consequences. AHTË G etc.-In a compound the first syllable of the second word may be regarded, at will and according to instances found in literature, as initial or non-initial. Thus , at etc., may or may not be dropped in the first syllable of the second member of a compound word ; o, g., gent. or gay from TT or gat; ge.or get from gaz. #in Jain Prakrit and Ardha-Māgadhi is aften changed to t; e. g., TT, TT, 3TITIT, 3111718 etc.; H, however, tries to explain the change of 7 to ot by IV. 447. 180. When 6, 7, 71, etc., are dropped the remaining stat, i, . 37 or 371, if preceded by sy or 31, is pronounced like a lightly articulate ( लघुप्रयत्नतर ) य. Thus नगर becomes 7977; 19H1o becomes F1AHIT; Tratas becomes q1213 and uns, after first dropping its natural I, becomes murs with a लघुप्रयत्नतरयकारश्रुति. This यश्रुति is possible only after अवर्ण according to H. Thus 1967, according to him, would be लोअस्स and not लोयस्स. The Jain manuscripts however, have this यश्रुति in instances like लोयस्स and also after इ, ई, T; and in some cases even after 5. The rule as given by मार्कण्डेय seems to be better: ___ अनादौ अदितौ वर्णों पठितव्यो यकारवत् । इति पाठशिक्षा । i..., non-initial 37 and should be pronounced like t. He adds further:
