________________ 710 APPENDIX __. “ It is difficult to give away one's money; it does not . occur (to any one ) to perform ansterities; the mind desires to enjoy happiness but is unable to do so.” (2) जेतुं त्यक्तुं सकलां धरां लातुं तपः पालयितुम् । विना शान्तिना तीर्थेश्वरेण कः शक्नोति भुवनेऽपि ॥ " Who except the तीर्थंकर शान्ति is able in this world to conquer and then abandon the whole earth, to take the vow and observe it?" 442. (1) गत्वा वाराणसी नराः अथ उजयिनीं गत्वा । . मृताः प्राप्नुवन्ति परमं पदं दिव्यान्तराणि मा जल्प ॥ “ By going to Benares and then visiting Ujjain men attain the highest place after their death; do not speak of. other holy places." (2) गङ्गां गत्वा यः म्रियते यः शिवतीर्थ गत्वा । क्रीडति त्रिदशावासगतः स यमलोकं जित्वा ॥ “He who dies after having visited the Ganges and Benares ( शिवतीर्थ), conquers यमलोक and enjoys pleasures in heaven. 443. हस्ती मारयिता लोकः कथयिता । पटहः वादयिता शुनकः भाषता ॥ " Elephant is in the habit of killing, people in the habit of-talking, the drum in the habit of resounding and the dog in the habit of barking." . 44. For नं मल्लजुज्झु see 382. 1. (1) रव्यस्तमने समाकुलेन कण्ठे वितीर्णः न छिन्नः। चक्रेण खण्डः मृणालिकायाः ननु जीवागेल: दत्तः॥ “On the setting of the sun the 27 bird become excited ( at the idea of separation from his mate ) and did not eat the piece of the lotus fibre though he had put it into his mouth; it was as if put there as a bar so that his life should not depart." (2) वलयावलीनिपतनभयेन धन्या ऊर्श्वभुजा याति । बल्लहविरहमहाह्रदस्य स्ताघं गवेषतीव ॥
