प्रथम प्रकाशः
(પ્ ) भवान्तराशुभोद्भूतं सतां दुःखं परीक्षणम् । कनुषप्राच्यपुण्योत्थ सुख दुःखाय पापिनाम् ।। મ
* પૂર્વભવનાં અશુભ કર્મના ઉદયથી સજ્જને ને પણ દુઃખ આવે છે, પણ એ એમની પરીક્ષા છે એમના જીવનની કસાટી છે. પૂર્વભવના કલુષિત પુણ્યના ઉદયથી પાપીએ પણ સુખ પ્રાપ્ત કરે છે, પણ એમનુ એ સુખ (થોડો વખત ચમકયા પછી) દુ:ખમાં પરિણમે છે.
[ પુણ્ય એ પ્રકારનું : શુભ અને અશુભ અને સુખસામગ્રી આપે છે, પણ પહેલાથી મળે છે સદ્ગુદ્ધિ અને બીજાથી દુઃખુદ્ધિ ] ૫

Even good people have to undergo calamities as a result of inauspicious Karmas incurred by them in their previous lives. But they consider their calamities as a touch-stone for ascertaining their manliness (and endure them calmly ).
On the other hand, even sinful men enjoy happiness as a result of evil *merit earned by them in their previous lives, but their happiness is, no doubt, to end in pain. 5
* Punya [merit} is of two kinds i good and evil. Both give articles of happiness, but particularly the former tends to goodmindedness, while the latter, to evilmindedness.
