THE CHARACTERISTICS AND INSTANCES OF THE SUBTLE (SAMABHIRUDHA) STANDPOINT.
ब्रूते समभिरूढोऽर्थ भिन्न पर्यायभेदतः । भिन्नार्थाः कुंभकलशघटा घटपटादिवत् ॥ १५ ॥
Whereas, the Samabhiroodh Naya does consider the difference of words expressing the same object. It holds that with the difference of the words expressing the object, the expression of the object also differs. Samabhiroodha considers such words as synonyms, and not as equivalents like Shabda.
For instance just as a jar() and a cloth (2) are different, so a jar, a pitcher, and a pot [Kumbha, Kalasa and Ghata though synonyms,] are different things-objects [according to their deriva. tive meanings: for instance Ghata is that which makes a noise like Ghata, Ghata, and so on.] 15
ARGUMENT AS TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUBTLE (SAMBHIRUDHA) STAND POINT.
यदि पर्यायभेदेऽपि न भेदो वस्तुनो भवेत् ।
भिन्नपर्यायो र्न स्यात् स कुंभपटयोरपि ॥ १६ ॥
(For] if different synonyms (Paryayas) of a thing do not distinguish that thing, there can be no such (distinction) between a jar and a cloth, which have (also) different words (Paryayas) for them. 16.
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUCH-LIKE STANDPOINT
एकपर्यायाभिधेयमपि वस्तु च मन्यते ।
कार्य स्वकीयं कुर्वाणमेवंभूतनयो ध्रुवम् ॥ १७ ॥
An object may be denoted by only one term, but it is fulfill ing (is in the state of fulfilling), at the very moment when it is denoted by the said term, its own natural function as expressed by the term, then Evambuta recognizes it. According to Evambuta the expression of the object, and the fulfilling of the function of the object as expressed by the term must be simultaneous.17
