May 29, 1998 My dear Members of Jain Samaj Europe and Shri Sharadbhai Bakhai, Jai Jinendra !
It is a great joy to all of us that we are completing ten successful years of the Temple's anniversary. This Leicester's Temple is unique in the history of Europe because a church has been elevated to a temple. Now the church is transformed into Mandir. This is a symbol and monument of
unity of man and understanding of mankind. Because of people's cooperation and understanding, the meaning of religion, which teaches unity in diversity, has been brought to reality. This Temple is a living example of peaceful cooperation. People of all walks of life, without any discrimination of caste or creed, man or woman, young or old, rich or poor, can come and pray peacefully to get in touch with their inner beauty.
When a world is torn in war and violence, we are blessed to have this rich heritage of non-violence and peaceful co-existence with all living beings.
Vardhaman Mahavir lighted the lamps of ahimsa, anekantavada, aparigraha, law of karma and self-realization. Now it is our privilege to go on pouring the oil of service in these lamps to keep illuminating the path of love, peace, understanding and simplicity.
The greed of man and the ego of politicians, the narrow-mindedness of parochialism and fanaticism of fundamentalists have driven people to war and violence. War and violence are dehumanizing and, because of war and violence, millions of people are being killed and billions are suffering agonizing pain and torture.
Through practice and expression, we bring to life this teaching of sacredness of all life which will influence our surroundings and the growing generation. They in turn will influence others and that generation will influence their coming generation. In this way, the teaching and heritage of Peaceful Liberators will go on and grow forever. We are what we are as vegetarians and believers in Reverence for Life because of our ancestors' and parents' influence. So, in the same way, by being models, we will be able to influence the future generation.
I feel happy to see the dream which I had envisioned in meditation that Jaina Dharma would dawn in the West has become a reality in Leicester with the help of Jain Samaj Europe.
I send my blessings to all of you and wish success of the celebration of the grand occasion which starts from the 10th of July.
