________________ by his father, for some years. It is to this second Karņa, the son of Bbima, that Sricandra is referring. This Karņa is mentioned by Devendra in his commentry on the Uttaradhyayana in Samvat 1141, i.e., C. A.D. 108414 and it is during his reign that a palm-leaf Ms. of the Yogadrstisamuccaya was prepared at Pattan in Samvat 1146, i. e. A.D 1089.15 The monastic ancestors of Śricandra and Sricandra himself had certain rulers and dignitaries as their contemporaries; and they can be shown in a tabular form: 1. Śrīkirti Mülārāja (c. 942-994) Sajjana 2. Śrutakirti Honoured by Gāngeya (c. 1019--38) • 3. Sabasrakirti Honoured by (c. 1020--40) Gangeya (c. 1019--38) and Bhojadeva (c. 1000--1055) Krsna 4. Viryacandra 5. Śricaudra contemporary of Karņa Three sons and four (c. 1064--94) daughters of Krşņa In the colophon3 of Dkrk Śricandra prefixes his name with Pandita upto 16 Samdhis ; but from 17 to 22 Samdbis he has a suffix Muni or Munindra. In the Prasasti he describes himself as Budba or Pandita. At the very beginning of Kk., however, he speaks of himself as Muni; and throughout the work he calls himself a Muni and Süri (in the Prasasti). That means he accepted mūni-diskā or renunciation after he wrote a major portion of Dkrk. The Dkrk was completed at Srimāla or Bhinmal in 1066 A.D. when Karna was ruling ; and thefi, after Suicandra became a monk, he undertook and completed the Kk, a few years latter, for the family of Sajjana (especially his sons and daughters, among the latter Sundū being highly devoted to Jinadharma). The Prāgvāta family to which Sajjana belonged had close ties with both Srimāla and Pattan; so as a inonk Śticandra came to Pattan. The date of the composition of Kk can be assigned to the beginning of the last quarter of the 11th century A.D., say roughly about or a little after 1070 A.D. as Dr. H.L. JAIN puts it. This suits very well with other dates kuown and recorded above. . Among the two works of Sricandra we do not know much about the contents of the Dkrk. It has got 21 Samdhis, and it seems that it contains tales conected woth Samyag-darśana, somethirg like the foretouner of the Samyaktvakaumudi. The details from its Prasasti are already discussed above. Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
