________________ ૨૩૨ જૈનહિતેચ્છુ masses is But to say that the initiative in such a matter must come from the quite absurd. Emerson says: "The masses are animal in pupilage and near chimpanzee. To say, then, that the majority are wicked, means no malice, no bad heart in the observer, but simply that the majority are unripe, and have not yet come to themselves, do not yet know their opinion. That, if they knew it, is an oracle for them and for all. Leave this hypocritical prating about the masses. Masses are rude, unmade, pernicious in their demands and influence, and need not to be flattered but to be schooled. I wish not to concede any thing to them, but to tame, drill and draw individuals out of them, Masses! the calamity is the masses! .......Wars, fires, plagues, break up immovable routine, clear the ground of rotten races and dens of distemper, and open a fair field to new men......The secret of culture is to learn that a few great points steadily reappear, alike in the poverty of the obscurest farm and in the miscellany of metropolitan life, and that these few are alone to be regarded; the escape from all false ties, courage to be what we are and love of what is simple and beautiful, independence and cheerful relation, these are the essential; these, and the wish to serve, to add somewhat to the well-being of men. "
