________________
The Dhyanastava is the Sanskrit composition of one hundred verses, the well-known exposition of meditation. It seems that the author (Bhaskaranand) of this small hymn was well-acquainted with Dhyanśataka which is quoted in Dhavlä. Both Prakrit and Sanskrit verses are presented in the series of Digambar Jaina texts in order to explain the nature of meditation and primary means and causes of deliverance, by which we can release our soul from karmas or bondages. As described by Miss Suzuko Ohira in the Introduction to Dhyanastava (published by Bharatiya Jñanpitha), it can be accepted that Bhaskaranandi flourished in the beginning of the 12th century A.D., and it is also an established fact that he was a Digambara Pandit of vakra gaccha, Desi gana of Mula sangha, as a disciple of Jina Chandra.
An eminent scholar of Jaina Philosophy, Pandit Balchandra Siddhanta Shastri edited this volume (both the important Texts), with Sanskrit commentary, Hindi translation and notes in a neat form. In the Introduction, he has dealt with the comparative study of Indian Yoga systems that might be very useful to every student of Philosophy who will read this volume. There is no doubt that the Shastri's contribution in the field of Jainology is worthy of appreciation. I congratulate him for this work of extra-ordinary labour and prolonged reflection.
