________________ 10 Introduction. MS. A contains a slightly enlarged text. Numerous small additions have been made in it, in order to elucidate the meaning of the respective passages. A very great number of these additions goes back to glosses of some previous MS. Every reader of our variants will verify this fact in many places. I, therefore, do not propose giving here all the proofs of my assertion. Some striking cases will be sufficient. In § 58 5 our text reads अत्रत्यजनार्पितताम्बूलमपि, 4 अत्रत्यजनादन्तर्पिततांबूलमपि Here a gloss दत्त, which must have been written in some previous MS. over ft, has crept into the body of the compound; hence the wrong long syllable T, and the wrong short syllable, in A's reading. In § 619 a gloss चिंतितं च has been inserted in 4 after स्वपामि (so 4 for स्वfufa), i. e. in a wrong place; for the glossator must have intended its insertion after दृष्ट्वा In 8650, A ins. सुभटा after सर्वे ऽपि. But, of course, they who weep are not the murderers, but the inhabitants of the town who in the morning find the corpse of the merchant. Wherever we remove the additions of A, we get a satisfactory text. Hence it is clear, that on the whole the group CDBW is more original than the text of A. CD do not share the additions and they avoid most of the corruptions of A; on the other hand, they are free from several mistakes, which BW have in common. Cp. § 108 BW TT for राजा, and $ 100 BW प्रयाणं for प्रयाण. In $ 132 BW wrongly om. f, and in § 1710 Tet. In the same section 14 BW read भ्रमती for correct भ्रमन्ती, in $ 358 कृतं for कृत. In $405 they evidently wrongly insert far after . In § 592 BW read •श्रुतमरण° for • श्रुततन्मरण°, in $ 652 कृत्यम् for कृतकृत्यम्. In § 66 20 they omit T, IV leaving out a blank for two aksharas. In 8678BWread प्रभूतस्थानोपकरणेपि for प्रभूतस्थापनोपायकरणे ऽपि. CD have a great quantity of right, and especially C of wrong readings of their own. This, and the cases just mentioned, show, that CD cannot have been copied from the immediate archetype of BW. Marking the author's MS. with, the common archetype of our five MSS. with, the archetype of CDBW with, the
