________________ CHAPTER II Avare ajjhavasāne sutivvamandānubhāvayam jivam Mannanti tahā avare nokammam chăvi jivotti (40) अपरेऽध्यवसानेषु तीव्रमन्दानुभागक जीव । मन्यन्ते तथाऽपरे नोकर्म चापि जीव इति । ४०॥ 40 Others believe the psychic potency which determines the intensity or mildness of conscious states to be the soul Still others identify the soul with non-karma matter which forms the constituent elements of the various kinds of organic bodies कम्मस्सुदय जीव अवरे कम्माणुभायमिच्छति । तिव्वत्तणमदत्तणगुणेहि जो सो हवदि जीवो ॥४१॥ Kammasudayam jivam avare kammānubhāyamichchhantı Tivvathanamandatatna gunehim jo so havadı jīvo va (41) कर्मण उदय जीवमपरे कर्मानुभागमिच्छन्ति । तीव्रत्वमन्दत्वगुणाभ्या य स भवति जीव ॥४१॥ 41 Some consider the manifestation of karma (resulting in pleasure or pain) to be the Self, some others believe that what determines the intensity or mildness of the edonic state (which is the fruit of karma) is the Self जीवो कम्म उहय दोण्णिवि खलु केवि जीवमिच्छति । अवरे सजोगेण दु कम्माण जीवमिच्छति ॥४२॥ Jivo kammam uhayam donnivi khalu keyi jīvamıchchhantı Avare samjogena du kammanam jivamichchhanti (42) जीवकर्मोभय द्वे अपि खलु केऽपिजीवमिच्छन्ति । अपरे सयोगेन तु कर्मणा जीवमिच्छन्ति ॥४२॥ 42 Some others state the Self to be jiva and karma taken variously or together, still others consider the self to be the product of the combination of the various karmas एवविहा बहुविहा परमप्पाण वदति दुम्मेहा । ते ण दु परप्पवादी णिच्छयवादीहि णिद्दिट्ठा ॥४३॥ Evamvihā bahuvihā paramappāņam vadantı dumamehā Te na. du parappavadi nichchhayavadihim niddittha (43) एवविधा बहुविधा परमात्मान वदन्ति दुर्मेधस । तेन तु परात्मवादिन निश्चयवादिभि निर्दिष्टा ॥४३॥
