सचित्र उत्तराध्ययन सूत्र
A person, not satiated with fragrances and intensely obsessed with acquiring them, never gains satisfaction. Aggrieved with the drawback of discontentment and overwrought by greed, such person takes belongings of others without being given (steals). (55) तहाभिभूयस्स अदत्तहारिणो, गन्धे अतित्तस्स परिग्गहे य । मायामुसं वड्ढइ लोभदोसा, तत्थावि दुक्खा न विमुच्चई से ॥ ५६ ॥
[451] द्वात्रिंश अध्ययन
तृष्णा से अभिभूत तथा गन्ध और परिग्रह में अतृप्त, दूसरों की वस्तुओं को चुराने वाले के लोभ की बुराई से कपट और झूठ बढ़ जाते हैं। कपट और झूठ का प्रयोग करने पर भी उसका दुःख समाप्त नहीं होता, दुःख से मुक्ति नहीं मिलती ॥ ५६ ॥
Overwhelmed by craving, the thief of others' belongings, not satiated with smell and possessions finds that his deceit and lies continue to multiply due to his vice of greed; however, he still (in spite of employing deceit and lie) fails to be emancipated from miseries. (56)
मोसस्स पच्छा य पुरत्थओ य, पओगकाले य दुही दुरन्ते । एवं अदत्ताणि समाययन्तो, गन्धे अतित्तो दुहिओ अणिस्सो ॥ ५७ ॥
असत्य-प्रयोग-मिथ्या बोलने से पहले, उसके पश्चात् और झूठ बोलते समय भी वह दुःखी होता है और उसका अन्त भी दुःखपूर्ण ही होता है। इस प्रकार गन्ध में अतृप्त, सुगन्धित वस्तुओं की चोरियाँ करने वाला व्यक्ति दुःखी और अनाश्रित हो जाता है ॥ ५७ ॥
He becomes sorrowful before, after and even while telling a lie and the consequences of the act too are painful. Thus the person indulging in theft and also not satiated with fragrance, becomes miserable and without refuge. (57)
गन्धाणुरत्तस्स नरस्स एवं कत्तो सुहं होज्ज कयाइ किंचि ? तत्थोवभोगे वि किलेसदुक्खं, निव्वत्तई जस्स कएण दुक्खं ॥ ५८ ॥
इस तरह गंध में आसक्त मानव को कदापि और कुछ भी सुख कैसे प्राप्त हो सकता है ? जिसके लिए वह दुःख सहन करता है, उसके उपभोग में भी उसे क्लेश और दुःख की ही प्राप्ति होती है ॥ ५८ ॥
Thus when, where and how much happiness can a person, infatuated with fragrance gain? For gaining that he suffers so much misery and even while enjoying the same he again suffers only pain and misery. (58)
एमेव गन्धम्मि गओ पओसं, उवेइ दुक्खोहपरंपराओ । पट्ठचित्तो य चिणाइ कम्मं, जं से पुणो होइ दुहं विवागे ॥ ५९ ॥
इसी तरह जो (अप्रिय - अमनोज्ञ) गन्ध में प्रद्वेष करता है, उसे दुःख समूह की परंपराएँ प्राप्त होती हैं। वह द्वेषयुक्त हृदय से जिन कर्मों का संचय करता है वही कर्म फलभोग के समय दुःखदायी बन जाते हैं ॥ ५९ ॥
In the same way one who hates stink also suffers a variety of miseries in succession; and the karmas he accumulates due to aversion-filled mind also come to fruition as pain. (59)
