सचित्र उत्तराध्ययन सूत्र
ममत्वरहित, अहंकारशून्य, वीतराग एवं आम्रवरहित होकर तथा केवलज्ञान से संपन्न होकर (अनगार) शाश्वत परिनिर्वाण (सिद्धगति) को प्राप्त कर लेता है ॥ २१ ॥
पंचत्रिंश अध्ययन [ 504]
- ऐसा मैं कहता हूँ ।
Getting free of fondness, devoid of ego, free of attachments, immune to inflow of karmas, endowed with omniscience he (the ascetic) attains eternal liberation (the status of Siddha). (21)

विशेष स्पष्टीकरण
गाथा ४-६ - भिक्षु को किवाड़ों से युक्त मकान में रहने की मन से भी इच्छा न करनी चाहिये। यह उत्कृष्ट साधना का, अगुप्तता का और अपरिग्रहभाव का सूचक है।
श्मशान में रहने से अनित्य भावना एवं वैराग्य की जागृति रहती है । चिता में जलते शवों को और दग्ध अस्थियों को देखकर किस साधक को विषयभोगों से विरक्ति न होगी ?
वृक्ष के नीचे रहना भी महत्वपूर्ण है । प्रतिकूलताओं को तो सहना होता ही है। बौद्धग्रन्थ विशुद्धि मार्ग में कहा है कि वृक्ष के नीचे रहने से साधक को हर समय पेड़ के पत्तों को परिवर्तित होते और पीले पत्तों को गिरते देखकर जीवन की अनित्यता का ख्याल पैदा होता रहेगा। अल्पेच्छता भी रहेगी।
गाथा २० – देह के छोड़ने का अर्थ देह को नहीं देहभाव को छोड़ना है, देह में नहीं देह की प्रतिबद्धताआसक्ति में ही बन्धन है। देह की प्रतिबद्धता से मुक्त होते ही साधक के लिये देह मात्र जीवन यात्रा का एक साधन रह जाता है, बन्धन नहीं ।
IMPORTANT NOTES
Verse 4-6-An ascetic should not even wish to live in a house with doors. This denotes his excellent spiritual pursuit, openness and resolve of non-possession.
The feeling of ephemeralness and renunciation remains alive by dwelling in cremation ground. Which aspirant would not develop apathy for worldly pleasures and comforts after looking at corpses and bones in burning pyres?
To live under a tree is also important. Adversities are to be tolerated. Vishuddhi Marg, a Buddhist scripture, says that by living under a tree and looking every moment at the changing texture of leaves and the falling yellow leaves, the thought of transitoriness of life is always live and vivid in the mind of an aspirant and his desires also remain a few.
Verse 20-To quit body does not mean to renounce the body; but to renounce the attachment to the body. Because, the body is not bondage, it is the attachment to the body that is bondage. Once the ascetic is free from fondness for his body, the body remains only a means of sustaining ascetic life, not bondage.
