विश्वकर्मन् मत्स्य पुराण-252 अध्याय V. 1-4.
प्रासादभवनादीनां निवेशं विस्तरा द्वद ।
कुर्यात् केन विधानेन कश्व वास्तुरुदाहृतः ॥ १॥ सूत उवाच---भृगुरत्रिवसिष्ठश्च विश्वकर्मा मयस्नथा।
नारदो नग्नजिच्चैव विशालाक्षः पुरन्दरः ।। २ ।। ब्रह्मा कुमारो नन्दीश: शौनको ग एव च । वास्तुदेव ऽनिरुद्धश्च तथा शुक बृहस्पती ॥ ३ ॥ अष्टादशेते विख्याता वास्तुशास्त्रोपदेशकाः। संक्षेपेणोपदिष्टन्तु मनवे मसरूपिणा ॥ ४॥
1. In ancicnt India, as many as cighteen Professors have been noted for the propagation of Principles of leare at one time or another. Their names are as under :--
___Bhrgu, Atri, Vasistha, Visvakarman, Maya, Nirada, Nagnajit, Visalaksa, Purandara, Brahma, Kumāra, Nandisa, Saunaka, Garga, Vasudeva, Aniruddha, Sukra and Brihaspati. It may be noted here that the names of some of these have been preserved in constructive stades of structures. (Vide विमानलक्षणम् wherein the 1st to 7th storeys are called respectively अत्रितल, भृगुतल, कुत्सतल, वसिष्टतल, गौतमत, काश्यपतल, and . अंगिरसतल from the nxmes of different वास्तूपदेशकs,)
2. विश्वकर्मप्रकाश-विश्वकर्मप्रकाश enumerates the various Professors of वास्तुशास्त्र who imparted the principles of that science to विश्वकर्मन् in due succession froin पराशर downwards. गर्ग expounded the स्तुशास्त्र to पराशर who in turn expounded it to बृहद्रथ and it was from the latter that विश्वकमेत् learnt all the principles of this शास्त्र. Here it may be observed that बसिष्ठ, गर्ग, गौतम, अत्रि, etc. preceded पराशर.
3. शिल्परत्नम् ---Opening benedictory verses 2-3.
पारुष्यांगो येन चादौ युगानां वास्था तथ्वा स्निग्धता प्रापितोऽवः । नित्यं देवरचितो विश्वकर्मा सोऽयं भूयात् सर्वलाको दयाय ॥ २ ॥
त्रिपुरपुरत्रयस्चन। यत्करयो : कर्मचातुरी जाता।
शिपिवरं तं दनुजरतिवरण मयं वन्दे ।। ३ ।। Here fara sf is invoked for blessings before 73, as the former (i. e. विश्वकर्मन्), was older than the latter among architects.
4.-सनत्कुमार वास्तुशास्त्र-no. 13060. (Sanskrit mss.) The experts in वास्तुशास्त्र ---
Brahman, Indra, Yama, Bhargava, Aigirasa, Gautama, Gargya, Manu, Vyasa, Bhrgu, Visvakarman and others.
विश्वकर्मन्--His gencalogy as cuiled from the Puranic tradition takes him back to king aa otherwise know in Sumerian Civilization as Oannes of Berossus.
