Their water supply being exhausted, and their being none within visibility who could replenish their supply, they called one another and spoke as follows : "Oh beloved of the gods ! We have reached a certain part of this forest which has no village nor any balting station for roving merchants or wandering cattle, our water supply is exhausted. So, oh beloved of the gods ! It is advisable that we in this village-less forest launch a search for some donor who may. offer us water.” Thus they heard from one another the same words repeated, and having heard, they launched a search for a donor of water in that village-less forest. .
त्तिकटु अण्णमण्णस्स अंतिए एअमट्ठ पा सुणंति । पडिसुणित्ता तीसे अगामियाए जाव...अडवीए उदगुदातारस्स सव्वओ समंता मग्गणगवेषणं करेइ । करित्ता उदगदातारमलभमाणा दोच्चंपि अण्णमण्णं सद्दावेंति । सद्दावेत्ता एवं वयासी--इह णं देवाणुप्पिया ! उदगदातारो णत्थि । तं णो खलु कप्पइ अम्हं अदिणं गिण्हित्तए । अदिण्णं सातिज्जित्तए । तं मा णं अम्हे इयाणिं आवइकालंमि अदिण्णं गिण्हामो अदिण्णं सादिज्जामो। मा णं अम्हं तवलोवे भविस्सइ। तं सेयं खलु अम्हं देवाणुप्पिया ! तिदंडयं कुंडियाओ य कंचणियाओ य करोडियाओ य भिसियाओ य छण्णालए य अंकुसए य केसरियाओ य पवित्तए य गणेत्तियाओ य छत्तए य वाहणाओ य पाउयाओ य धाउरत्ताओ य एगते एडित्ता गंगं महाणई
ओगाहित्ता वालुअसंथारए संथरित्ता संलेहणाझोसियाणं भत्तपाणपडियाइक्खियाणं पाओवगयाणं कालं अणवकंखमाणाणं विहरित्तए ।
वैसा कर-खोज करने पर भी जलदाता नहीं मिला। वे फिर परस्पर एक दूसरे को सम्बोधित कर इस प्रकार कहने लगे-देवानुप्रियों ! यहां कोई जलदाता नहीं है, बिना दिया हुआ लेना, सेवन करना हमारे लिये कल्पनीय नहीं है-ग्राह्य नहीं है और न अदत्त-बिना दिया हुआ भोगने का ही है। इसलिये
