arguments taken from the TP for this purpose. 10 Ch, finished his Pra. in V. S. 1334-A.D. 1277 March 12.11 So the TP was known fifteen years before our nis was copied. We may, however, go further. As there is nothing which goes against the historicity of the incident mentioned by Chandraprabha Sūri we may say that the TP was a well known work even in the 11th cent. A. D. and that it was used as a powerful dialectical weapon.12
Abhayadevasūri - the teacher of Sainti Sūri in Pramāna: Šāstra-in his commentary on Sanmatitarka called Tattvabodhavidhāyini popularly known as Vadarnahārnava has passages which seem to be adapted from the TPS as shown by Pandit Sukhlalji and Pt. Bechardas in their excellent edition of San. matitarka, Vol. IV pp. 547-51 footnotes. Now AblayadevaSūri being a teacher of Sinti Sūri who died in V. S. 1096 -A. D. 1040 falls in the first half of the 11th century A, D.13
Thus the evidence considered above enables us to say that the TP was well known in Gujarat during the period of 11th to 13th centurics of the Christian Era. The Digambara Jain works of the Southern India lead us still further.
Students of South Indian Jainism know very well that the great Digambara Pontiff Akalankadeva (A. D. 620-80) wrote a number of authentic philosophical works and gave great impetus to the development of Jain Nyāya.14 In that tradition Vidyanandin who wrote such works as Tattvarthaslokavārtika and Astasahasri is a great name. Anantavirya is another important name. He wrote a commentary on the Siddhivinischaya of Akalankadeva. This commentary, not yet published in a printed form, cxists in the MS. library of Kodai
