down to you, Sir', doing it in an inaudible tone, doing it very loudly so as to mix one's
words with those of others, bowing down to all by simply turning the
head in all directions.697

(d) Padikkamana :
The abstention from subjective or objective transgressions was called 'padikkamaņa. There were six types of it common with those of the Svetāmbaras, to wit: Daivasika
done at day time, Rātrika
done at night, Airyāpathika
regarding movement, Pākşika
fortnightly, Cāturmāsika
four-monthly, Sāmvatsarika
yearly. The determination consisted of abstaining from wrong belief (mithyātva), non-control (asamyama), passions (kaşāya) and movement (yoga). Before the 'padikkamana', 'ālocanā' or confession of transgression was done.698
After performing 'vandana' and scanning the place of sitting or by carefully wiping it with the peacock-feather broom, the monk confessed his transgressions before the guru by joining together his palms and by giving up all pride and secrecy.
It may be noted here that the Mülācara refers to the point, already noted from the Bhagavatisūtra, that 'pratikramana' was compulsory during the period of the first and the last Tirthankaras whether a fault was
