A survey of these various units, a few among which are corroborated by the Mathura inscriptions, tend to lead one to the following observations:

Koḍivarisiya Pundavaddhaniya Uccānagari
(i) The Kottiya Gana is frequently referred to. Probably it was one of the oldest Ganas, and hence one of the most respected also.
(ii) The Ganas seem to have in some cases (like Godāsa and Uttarabalissaha) received their names after the proper names of their originators.
(iii) Many of the Kulas and the Sakhās" were named after either personal or regional names: Isipāliyä, Sävatthiya, etc.
