________________ श्रमण / जुलाई-सितम्बर / १९९६ 4. ६३ dealing with the history of Jaina literature etc. I was unable to have access to any of its manuscripts. It has two published editions - one with other extant Niryuktis, under the title 'Niryukti Samgraha', published from Lakhabawal, Saurastra and second from Bhavanagar, alongwith Curni, hereafter referred to as Lakhabawal edition and Bhavanagar edition, respectively. In Lakhabawal edition the number of gatha is misrepresented as 142 but infact it contains only 140 gāthās. As gāthā at S.No. 33 is the repetition of S.No. 32 and quite surprisingly S.No. 111 is missing, that is after S.No. 110 comes S.No. 112. Bhavanagar edition also upheld this number i.e. 140. An eminent scholar of Jainism, Prof. H.R. Kapadia," gives the number of Niryukti gāthās as 154. He has also given the section (Adhyayana) wise break up of the gathās as 9, 11, 3, 10, 7, 4, 11, 8, 6, 7, 8, and 15. He has not indicated about the source of this information, however, agreegate of these gathās is 99 only. Thus the whole account is doubtful. Again Niśītha Sutra Bhāṣya cites, all of Paryūṣaṇa Kalpa Adhyayana, the eight chapter of this Niryukti, in the tenth uddeśaka (section) from S.No. 3138 to 3209. But the number of these gāthās, designated as Niryukti gāthā— Imā Nijjutti in the Bhāṣya, is 72 against 67 found in Niryukti." Five gathās, called as Niryukti gāthā coming at S.No. 3155, 3170,3175,3192, and 3209 are missing in both editions of Niryukti. Their respective marked out places in Niryukti being after 68th, 82nd, 86th, 101st and 119th gāthās. Again 82nd gāthā of Niryukti is a combination of two gāthās occurred in Bhāṣya at S.No. 3169 and 3170. It is notable that in Bhavanagar edition, Cürni of the missing gāthās is available at their prescribed places, that is after the Cūrṇi of 68th etc. gathās. The content of curnis, of above-said gāthās, is the same in both works i.e. Daśāśrutaskandha cūrṇi and Niśītha Sūtra Bhāṣya Cūrṇi. The Curni of the 82nd gatha - a combination of two gāthās also contains Curni of both 3169 and 3170 gāthās as is evident from corresponding portion of Niśītha Bhasya-Cūrṇi.
