Šila-vipatti
The ten causes of Šīla-vipatti are :(i) Adita eva durgļhito bhavati–He is badly overpo
wered from the very beginning. A renounced pudgala is influenced in his actions by a king, is afraid from a thief, is loan-troubled, is afraid on account of ‘ājīva' and his actions are not aimed
at attaining Nirvāṇa. (ii) Atilīno bhavati : He becomes unashamed, practises
less bad deeds and turns careless to the teachings
of the Buddha. (iii) Atissto bhavati : He is exceeded by others. (iv) Pramādakausidya parigrhito bhavati : He is gripp
ed by indolence (sloth), is a victim to an āpatri in the past, present or in future but does not recompense it, and conducts in a way as affected by
inattention (pramāda), (v) Mithyāpraņihito bhavati : Through his conduct a
pudgala aspires for elusive things such as worldly
gains and benefits. (vi) Ācāra-vipattyā parigrhito bhavati : He resorts to
immoral acts (anācāra). (vii) Ajīvavipattyā parigrhīto-bhavati : A pudgala resorts
to forbidden ‘ājīva' and thus is clutched by
ājīvavipatti (viii) Antadvayapatito bhavati : He entangles himself
between the two extremes of 'is' and 'is not, of
kāmasukhallikānuyoga' and 'ātmaklamathānuyoga. (ix) Anairayāņiko bhavari : He resorts to peculiar
notions, the dogmatic views (dịsti) and Sīlavrataprāmarsa.
