Evidently, therefore, as the Jain sages hold, there must be, in addition to love and knowledge, something else in Punja as forming one of its fundamental factors. And this additional element is the supreme effort, an act of personal resolution without which a Punya cannot be practised and completed. Revealing as it does in the form of last choice, the final decree for immediate execution without further deliberation, this third element is called the Virya, the power or the will-to-do. Virya is the faculty of initiating a change which is not determined by any anterior change. Thus is Virya identical with the ultimate authority or liberty which is a
