________________ 152 भगवती सूत्र शः २ उ: १ ते णं काले णं ते णं समए णं कयंगला नाम नगरी होत्था। वण्णओ। तीसे णं कयंगलाए नयरीए बहिया उत्तरपुरत्थिमे दिसिभाए छत्त. पलासए णामं चेइए होत्था। वण्णओ। तए णं समणे भगवं महावीरे उप्पन्ननाणदसणधरे जाव...समोसरणं। परिसा निग्गच्छइ। 18. In that period, at that time, Sramaņa Bhagavān Mahāvira departed from the Guņaśila caitya in the outskirts of) the city of Rajagxha. Having moved out (from there), he was wandering in the neighbouring villages. In that period, at that time, there was a city named Krtaigala. Description (as before). In the outskirts of that city, at a place between the north and the east, there was a caitya called Chatrapalasaka. Description. Sramana Bhagavān Mahāvīra, master of supreme kevala-knowledge and kevala vision (arrived)....till congregation. People went out (to listen). तीसे णं कयंगलाए नयरीए अदूरसामंते सावत्थी नाम नयरी होत्था। वण्णओ। तत्थ णं सावत्थीए नयरीए गद्दभालस्स अन्तेवासी खंदए णामं कच्चायणस्सगोते परिवायगे परिवसइ। रिउव्वेद-जजुव्वेद-सामवेद-अहव्वणवेद इतिहासपंचमाणं निघंटुछट्ठाणं चउण्हं वेदाणं संगोवंगाणंसरहस्साणं सारए वारए धारए पारए संडगवी सद्वितंतविसारए संखाणे सिक्खाकप्पे वागरणे छंदे निरुत्ते जोइसामयणे अन्नेसु य बहूसु बम्हण्णएसु परिव्वायएसु नयेसु सुपरिनिठिए या वि होत्था। Not far from the city of Kệtangalā, there was a city named Srāvasti. In that city of Srāvasti, there lived a monk of the Parivrājaka order, named Skandaka, who belonged to the line of Kātyāyana, and who was a disciple of Gaddavāla. He was profoundly versed in, and had reached the depth of, the four Vedas, Rk-Sam-Yajur-Atharva, fifth Itihāsa (History), sixth Nighantu (Vedic index), and all literary works based on them. He preserved them in memory, corrected others if necesssary, upheld them', and attained perfection in them. He was the master of the six Angas, Sastitantra (of Kapila), Ganita (Mathematics), Siksa (Phonetics), Acāra (Conventions), Vyakarana (Grammar), Chanda (Prosody);
