प्रश्न ३६-जइ णं भंते ! संजमे अणण्हयफले तवे वोदाणफले किं पत्तियं णं भंते ! देवा देवलोएसु उववज्जति ? तत्थ णं कालियपुत्ते नाम थेरे ते समणोवासए एवं वयासि : उत्तर ३६-पुन्वतवेणं अज्जो ! देवा देवलोएसु उववज्जति । तत्थ णं मेहिले नाम थेरे समणोवासए एवं वयासि : -पुव्वसंजमेणं अज्जो! देवा देवलोएसु उववज्जति । तत्थ णं आणंदरखिए नाम थेरे ते समणोवासए एवं वयासि : ---कम्मियाए अज्जो ! देवा देवलोएसु उववज्जति। तत्थ णं कासवे नाम थेरे ते समणोवासए एवं वयासि :
-संगियाए अज्जो ! देवा देवलोएसु उववज्जति । पुव्वतवेणं पुव्वसंजमेणं कम्मियाए संगियाए अज्जो ! देवा देवलोएसु उववज्जति। सच्चे णं एस अट्ठे नो चेव णं आयभाववत्तव्वयाए।
On hearing and perceiving the spiritual sermons from the illustrious monks, the followers of the śramana order were delighted and pleased....till their mind was full of joy, and they moved round (the monks) thrice....till worshipped them in three ways, and having done so, they made submission as follows :
Q. 35. Bhante ! What is the outcome of restraint ? Bhante ! What is the outcome of penance ?
On this the illustrious monks said as follows to the followers of the śramaņa order :
A. 35. Arya! Restraint stops influx of fresh karma fetters, while penance liberates the soul of karma bondage and purifies it.
Whereon the followers of the śramaņa order submitted further :
