३१७ नही है। मुसलिम विजेताओने इस शब्दका निर्माण किया था। पं० जवाहरलाल नेहरूने लिखा है कि-"भारतवर्षके लिए हिन्द शब्दका व्यवहार होता है, जो हिन्दुस्तान शब्दका सक्षिप्त रूप है। पश्चिम एशिया, ईरान, टर्की, ईराक, अफगानिस्तान, ईजिप्ट तथा अन्यत्र भारतको पहलेकी तरह
आज भी हिन्द कहा जाता है । प्रत्येक भारतीय पदार्थको हिन्दी कहते है। हिन्दीका धर्मसे कोई सम्बन्ध नहीं है। भारतीय मुसलिम अथवा भारतीय ईसाई उतना ही हिन्दी है, जितना कि हिन्दूधर्मको माननेवाला । अमेरिकावासी सभी भारतीयोको हिन्दू कहते है, यह पूर्णतया मिथ्या बात नहीं है।
