Of the existence of the Shvetambare Sect, as early as the first century of the Christian era, we have direct proof through some of the inscriptions discovered at Mathura. These inscriptions oscur on the pedestals of statues of Jain Tirthankars and are dated according to the era of the celebrated Indo-Scythian kings Kanishka, Huvishka and Vasudeva, which is probably identical with the wellknown Shaka era beginning with the year 78-79 A. D. They state that those statuos were erected by the pious devotion of members of the Shvetambara sect. The fact that the donors belonged to that sect and not to the Digambaras, is proved by the circumstance that the inscriptions specify certain divisions of Jain monks, which as we know from the Sthaviravali or list of pontiffs' in the KALPASUTRA, belonged to the Shyetambar sect. Thus in an inscription, dated in the 9th year, in the reign of king Kanishka (i. e. 87-88 A. D.), it is stated that the statue to which it refers was erected by a Jain laywoman called Vikata, at the instance of her religions guide Nagnandin who belonged to the Kotiya or Kantika) division (Gana). The latter division, as the Sthaviravali shows was founded by the Sthavira Susthika who died in the year 313 after Mahavir or 154 B. C, Thus indirectly the Mathura inscriptions afford evidence that carries back the existence of the Shvetambar sect to the middle of the second century before Christ.
