These are small acts of respectful behaviour de rigueur. . ३९. परार्थव्यापृतिर्वैयावृत्त्यम् । तच्च आचार्य-उपाध्याय-स्थविर-तपस्वि-ग्लान-शैक्ष-कुल-गण-संघ-साध मिकभेदाद् दशविधम् । 39. parārthavyāprtir vaiyāvrttyam. tac ca ācārya-upadhyaya-sthavira-tapasvi-glana-saiksa-kula-ganasamgha-sādharmikabhedad dasavidham. (Aph.) Service consists in the exertion for aid and relief to others. (XXXIX) (Gloss) It is tenfold inasmuch as it can be in respect of (these ten): the pontiff, the preceptor, elder, mortifier, the sick, a novice, the company, the commune, the order, and companions. ४०. श्रुतस्याऽध्ययनं स्वाध्यायः। स च वाचना-प्रच्छना-परिवर्तना-अनुप्रेक्षा-धर्मोपदेशभेदात् पञ्चविधः। 40. śrutasya'dhyayanaṁ svādhyāyah. sa ca vacana-pracchana-parivartana-anupreksa-dharmopadesabhedāt pañcavidhaḥ. (Aph.) Scriptural study means an educational course in scriptures. (XL) (Gloss) It is of five types, viz. (i) imparting training in scripture and its meaning, (ii) inquiry about the word and meaning for clearing doubts, (iii) recapitulation of text learnt by rote, (iv) contemplation of the text and the meaning, (v) preaching the discipline through various anuyogas (disquisitions). ४१. एकाग्रे मनःसन्निवेशनं योगनिरोधो वा ध्यानम् । केवलिनां योगनिरोध एव, एकाग्रे मनःसन्निवेशनस्य तत्राऽनावश्यक त्वात् । एतच्छद्मस्थानामन्तर्मुहूर्तावधिकं भवति । 41. ekāgre manaḥsanniveśanaṁ yoganirodho vā dhyānam. kevalināṁ yoganirodha eva, ekāgre manahsanniveśanasya tatrā'. pāvasyakatvāt.
