________________ Introduction 23 Bhattavādīndra was a southerner but as a commentator of the Kiranavali he belongs to the Maithila school and Udayana's influence is visible in the Vyakhya also. But Candrānanda gives no such clue to fix up his affiliation, date or birth-place. The Commentary is lucid. It explains all the sutras and does not enter into intricacies introduced by other commentators of the Sutras. Thus he passes over the minute discussions on dvitva, pakajotpatti, vibhagajavibhaga etc., a knowledge of which is essential for a Vais'eṣika scholar even to-day. Candrānanda's Vrtti did not receive the circulation, it deserves and we find no mention of him in later Vais'esika literature. Conclusion The present volume will be a valuable addition to the too few works on the Vais'eṣika system available in print. The learned editor spared no pains to make it useful by adding learned foot-notes and a number of important appendices including portions of ancient texts restored from Tibetan, while he was under a serious handicap like the bereavement at the sad demise of his revered father and Gurudeva (in the worldly and spiritual lives respectively), His Holiness Munirāja S'RI BHUVANAVIJAYAJI MAHĀRĀJA at the famous Jaina Tīrtha (holy place) of Sri Sankhes'vara PĀRS'VANĀTHA (Gujrat) on 16th February, 1959. The learned editor derived constant and earnest help in all his actvities from his Gurudeva. It was at the instance of the late Muniraja that the learned editor took up this onerous task ( in 1957), the accomplishment where of has also been possible through his profouud grace and active help. May His blessings from heaven give the editor more strength in his endeavour to propagate the lost treasures of the S'astras.
