of the author, but they are essentially sincere attempts of the editors to reach the probable focus-centre, from which these corruptions might have arisen, after taking into account the possible orthographical confusions, metrical needs, exigencies of the context etc. The editors were wavering how and where to give these emendations. There were two alternatives before them: The corrupt reading agreed upon by both the Mss. should be kept as it is in the body of the text as a sacred relic which had suffered a sacrilege at the hands of generations of copyists, and the editorial emendation should be given in the foot-notes in square brackets; or the emendation itself should be put in the text, and the so-called corrupt readings of Da and Ba should be given in the foot-notes. Strict method would have welcomed the first alternative, while the second one seemed to possess some practical advantages that majority of the readers, who are after the contents, would like to have a meaningful text which has been followed in preparing the Hindi paraphrase as well. The text-critic may be requested to keep his eye more on the foot-notes to get the actual reading. In a few cases some emendations of remote probability are put in the foot-notes. These emendations are modest proposals; there is full scope for better suggestions; but let us remember that they are all tentative till they are confirmed by the readings of some genuine M88. The text-critic who has any experience of editing such texts would, we hope, certainly approach our performance with sympathy for the arduous task of the editors of an editio princeps, and offer his constructive criticism which the editors would gladly welcome and feel thankful for the same.
In giving the Hindi rendering the editors have a twofold aim in view. First, most of the readers, especially from the Jaina community, who look upon the contents of this work with some religious sanctity, would welcome a translation in Hindi more than in any other provincial languages like Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi or Tamil. Secondly, of all the modern Indo-Aryan languages Hindi has decidedly superior olaims to play the role of the National Language of India, and more we enrich it with such translations better would be its prosperity in future. The Hindi translation is a literal paraphrase of the original text; and space prohibited the editors from entering into explanatory digressions.
It is a matter of pleasure to remember with gratitude various friends who have been associated with this work in one way or the other. It was very kind of Pt. K P. Jaina, Aliganj, Pt. K. Bhujabali Shastri, Arrab, and Sri Pannalalji, Delhi, who helped me with Me. material. It pains me to note that Sheth Raoji Sakharam Doshi, who lent us the Sholapur Ms, did not live to see this edition published. For their upgrudging co-operation, thanks are due to Pts. Balacandra and Jambukumara whose share in the preparation of this edition has been duly indicated in the Hindi Prakkathana.
I wonder how I would have been able to finish this work without the valuable co-operation of Prof Hiralalaji. Despite heavy work on hand, he kindly accepted my request to edit this text jointly with me; and his close acquaintance with the contents of Dhavala came to our rescue in understanding many a difficult passage. Brother Hiralalaji has such a genial temperament that it is a pleasure to
